Arrived at Mattawoman around 2100 on Friday, fished for a while, caught a nap and then hit it again around 0530. End results were 2 snakeheads (21 & 22 inches) 2 bass ( 15-16 inches) a small blue cat soaking herring in the dark and a lot of missed fish. Fished a zoom horny toad knock off most of the morning and missed quite a few blow ups along the weed edge just downstream from the barge. Successfully "bait and switched" the 2 snakeheads I landed, once they blew up and missed the frog, I threw a jerk shad up in the same area and stuck 'em. Also missed a dozen or so blow ups above the steel wall way back in the spatterbock. Best time was right at daylight.
Around noon I decided I needed lunch and a nap so I packed up and headed towards Mallows Bay. My first time here. Launched around 1430 and worked my way out into the ships. First impression, as stated by others, leave the mirage drive at home and be ready to add a few scrapes to your yak. The area was a little smaller than I expected and definately more wide open than Mattawoman. The ships extend from shore, through shallow weedy areas and out to the open water. I concentrated on the edge of the weeds and shallower. Ended up with around 10 bass and another 8-10 missed blow ups with 2 confirmed snakehead misses. Not bad for the middle of the day! Bass ranged from around 12-16 inches. Explored back up into the creek that feeds the area and it is pretty weed chocked. Heard some huge blow ups back in the spatterbock but the stuff is so thick I have no idea how you would fish it ??? Loaded up at around 1930 to make sure I was out before sunset. Btw, does anyone know what the consequences are for being at Mallows after closing time? Do they ticket? The way the gate looks you wouldn't be able to get in but you could leave whenever you want...
