Your rigs are plenty good for most inshore sharks- a big hammerhead and/or Tiger would spool you but sand tigers, lemons, sandbars and bulls should be good to go- the bite wire double haywire twist is fine- that would be good for most any shark- if it were me I would double crimp-

Appreciate that Joe. It was nice meeting you at the shop a while back. I've pretty much shelved the Yaks for about a month as I've fully switched to targeting bull red drum from the Surf. Here's to hoping its a better run then last year. I'll catch up with you soon.

Fishing from the surf presents its own set of challenges- You need a much longer rod to keep the line above the breakers and a lot of line capacity- I used to use a 12/0 Penn Senator with 1300 yards of 80# Courtland Greenspot dacron...leader was 15 feet of 1/16" braided stainless steel aircraft control cable swedged to a 1000 pound test swivel- bite leader was double stranded 360# test Sevenstrand tobacco colored stainless steel wire with welded eye 16/0 tuna hook- a good bait was a half of a skate or ray...for the really "no-shit" fish we used 10 feet of number 9 galvanized machine chain for bite leader- a big Tiger shark can bite the 1/16" braided wire in two without even making the clicker go off- the single strand 360 is lightly twisted when you double it and I use a haywire twist to secure the hook to it and it to the swivel on the braided leader- for the chain, I use a sailboat clevis to secure the hook to the chain and the chain to the braided leader-
We used to use a similar rig in Hatteras, although I fished from a chair in the back of a topless '74 Chevy Blazer. I had a 14/0 Senator with a Daiwa 9093 Tournament graphite rod (still have it), one buddy had a 12/0 and the other had a 16/0. In the old days (pre-yak), we would run baits offshore with a Zodiak type boat but the keel got pretty beat up from all the surf launchings. My buddy came up with this thing he called "The Surf Sub" which was this balsa framed fiberglass encapsulated looking craft that looked like a combination of boat and submarine. It had a 30 lb thrust Minn Kota motor with the shaft cut down, and a bait drop mechanism, all radio controlled by a Futaba 2 channel R/C unit. Standing on the hood of the truck we could get baits out about 400 yards. It was painted blaze orange on one side and neon green on the other so we knew which way it was going.

        Good Times.

ronault- i just doubled up all of my crimps and ive got an outing at three am till about eight or so when work calls hopefully weather holds out and ill have a report!

mtd- giime a call or text sometime ths week or whenever ill be on the beach a lot this week i hope i think i saw you the other morning if you have a white wrangler. but ive seen reports of four bulls aready in the suds and other than the toothies my other rigs will all be crabs haha hopefully we get some takers if the water stays warm!

joker- thats pretty genius! ive heard of a few remote control vehicles that people use to drop baits but havent seen one in action it seems too good to be true i used to have a buddy that paddled baits out on a 12' longboard but he didnt think too much most of the time lol ive been looking at 10/0 lately a few people around here have some ut theyre from the 60s and 70s and i saw they started re-making the 14/0 but that could be too much if thats possible. i dont know what to expect in terms of size this close to shore in this area i guess 10' is a very real possiblity but bigger here does anyone know ?
          Malibu stealth 14 with a paddle....still lol

Joe- With warming climate, who knows what will be swimming close to shore- normally you have to be Va. Beach and south to get big sharks from shore- the world record Tiger shark was caught on a Penn 16/0 off Cherry Grove South Carolina fishing pier...the night before he caught the world record 1800 pound female his 16/0 was stripped clean by a bigger shark...Cherry Grove banned shark fishing from shore after this record catch-

Joe, sorry missed your post. I was out on the beach all day yesterday. No reds or biters for me yesterday, just a bunch of bait, blues, and croakers. I'll be out on Saturday til Sunday morning. Gotta put in some time.

My Jeep is silver. I'll try to catch up with you soon.
