Fished the Middle Branch of the Patapsco putting in at Harbor Hospital going almost out to McHenry, Wednesday, 8-22-12, 9:45am-2:00pm. Wind was nearly calm all day. The weak tidal patterns we are in right now resulted in tide currents that were barely detectable all day long. In addition, water clarity sucked, 10”-16” at all locations. Water clariety that poor makes for poor fishing. Although I caught fish, fishing overall was fairly lackluster. I had a hard time catching enough wperch just barely over 9” to make a meal. Nearly all stripers were dinks to micro dinks with a couple up to the mid-teens. I did catch one 15” blue that came home with me as did 8 smallish wperch. I fished either small soft plastics or small white Hopkins fished mostly vertical.
I generally don’t fish the Patapsco during the heat of the summer because of the eternally poor water clarity. But with all the reports of puppy drum invading the Bay I thought I’d give it a try just so I could catch one before them left for the winter. I didn’t catch any puppies. In another month or so the water will cool enough to improve water clarity. That’s when I’ll be fishing the Patapsco. I’ll keep fishing there until it just gets too dang cold to fish, like around early December. Maybe see some of you there in the fall.
