It has been very busy at work for the last several weeks and I needed to take a mental health day badly. I have never been to Point Lookout before and have been wanting to fish there for awhile. The tide looked like it would be ideal for a Thursday afternoon outing so I took the day off. PLO is about two hours from where I live but the drive went quickly and it was certainly better than being at work.
When I arrived I drove around the park to check out the amenities. Very nice park. Fishing pier looked nice. Swimming beach and playground looked nice if you wanted to bring the family and bug spray. I was surprised how empty the park was. I know it was during the week but it was such a nice day. People need to call in sick more (myself included). When I finally made it to the boat ramps I was the only car in the parking lot.
I had stopped at one of the bait stores along the way and picked up some squid for croaker or flounder. I also had 3" Gulp. I fished briefly in Lake Conoy before heading out through the inlet... I didn't have any hits but saw fish breaking. I paddled out along the shore heading towards the point. The tide was coming in so it took a bit to get there. If my calculations are correct it's about 1.25 miles from the boat ramps to the point.
As I paddled out to the point I noticed some metal pilings just before you get to the point and decided to paddle back to throw out a couple casts. First cast yielded a small blue so I decided to stay for a while. Minutes later I landed my first Redfish ever! I then caught a toad fish. Then after that it was Red after Red after Red.
After the tide died the fishing slowed and I caught a couple small Flounder. With the sun starting to go down I started to drift back. I paddled out to deeper water. During the drift I picked up a bigger blue. I stopped and fished the backside of the rock piles surrounding the swimming beach. Had a bunch of hits but only manage to catch another toad. All fish were caught on a bottom rig using squid.
By the time I got back to the ramps it was dark. I loaded up and headed home.
I was beat the next day and I decided to take off another day of work and go fishing with my dad from his sail boat on the Rhode river. We were into perch one after the other. My dad was killing them. However, we were only getting small ones. Then my dad says I think I got a big one. I looked over and his pole was bent over and the fish was fighting hard. It started to go under the boat. My dad finally got it to the surface and to our surprise it was a Red! It was my dad's first Red!
Good times!
