Frustrated with the small crabs in the Gunpowder a month ago, I decided to give it another shot as they usually fatten up by late august. After my first run with a few nice large crabs I thought the day would be a slam dunk. It slowed down from there as there were still lots of throwbacks, but I did manage a couple dozen nice crabs. I started off the day poorly by forgetting the roller for my propstick. I had to rig something up to keep the line attached to my propstick which is really the outrigger arm for the hobie ama kit. I used a flexible tube that i had and lashed it with rope to the arm. It wasn't great but was serviceable. I had another close moment when I was running the line and didn't seem to notice the crab crawling out of the basket, which was now inside my kayak
I also made a netting error where i missed a nice crab barely, but I got another stab at it. I acted so quickly with the second lunge that the force sent the crab skyward over the hull of my kayak. I had one more shot, and like a centerfielder reaching over the wall to save a homerun, I caught the crab with outreached net (and the crowd went wild!)
