Kevin and I decided to take a last minute trip to Tall Timbers to fish the jetties at the entrance to Herring Creek. I also jotted down the coordinates to a nearby rock pile. I hit the water at a little after 4pm, which was at low tide, and the current was close to slack. That wasn't optimal, but there was still plenty of water in the inlet, and we would have a nice incoming current near sunset. The water temperature was around 78*.
I worked some nearby marshy areas and the riprap at the creek mouth while I waited for Kevin. I picked up a small puppy drum, and that was it. I didn't even have many hits. Kevin showed up around 5:30:
We headed out the rock pile and trolled (a Tony spoon for me) on the way. I saw a nice school of something on the bottom in 25ft of water, but I couldn't find it again after I rigged up a Stingsilver. My GPS was giving me fits because it wouldn't hold a steady course. The rock pile turned out to be less of a pile and more of a mound. I tried a Stingsilver and a bottom rig with Fishbites. The bottom current was hauling, which made fishing it difficult. I didn't see much on the fishfinder, so we decided to work some structure near shore in hopes of specks, drum, and stripers. Nothing hit the deep diving Crystal minnow I trolled toward shore.
I didn't have any luck closer to shore, but I got a neat pic of an old dock near sunset (I should've backed off a bit so I wouldn't cast a shadow):
The sunset itself wasn't too bad, either:
A few blues that looked to be decent size, maybe 16-18", started jumping in the area. I threw everything I had at them and couldn't buy a bite.
I managed two stripers on a Stillwater Smack-it. Here's the biggest one:
WTF? Anyway, that was it for me for the evening. As Kevin pointed out, the trip was success because we had neither wind nor lightning. That might've been a first for the year.
