  • The High Cost of the Specks in St Jerome's Creek Inlet, MD - Sep 13, 2012

Went to ST. Jerome’s creek for specks. I have caught small specks in ST. Jerome's Creek for the past 3 years. I haven't caught a keeper size speck in the Western Shore for three years.

Finally caught 3 specks at 14.5, 15.5 and 18.5 inches. I released the 14.5 incher and kept two bigger ones

When filleting the specks in the kitchen, I dropped the fillet knife on my foot and cut a tendon.

Spent night in the E.R. My foot was stitched up temporarily, and My tendon surgery will be on Tuesday.

No fishing for at least one month for me.

Nice video as always and sorry to hear about the accident. Good looking trout, were you slow trolling the lures the whole time to catch them?

          Ryan,

To me, trolling is more effective than casting. I started casting first then I switched to trolling. I was moving at 3mph. Sometimes I caught more by twitching the rod top (in other locations) . But yesterday, I caught all three when I didn't twitch.

I didn't catch any fish when I trolled channels (6' deep) in the creek inside the inlet yesterday. So I went out fished between the inlet and the red roof house in 6.5-8' (kind of edge)of water. This is the same spot I catch striper in Fall and Winter. I let the line out 150-180' to lower the lure because I was using 3/8oz jig.

3.5" BA salt & pepper is my go to lure for small speck. I used 5" BA for the bigger specks. I also like BA silver body and red tail.

I used wide gap hooks (from BassPro/Cabelas) for specks and reds

Ouch! I hate ER trips...I am in Portland, Orgeon this morning (3 hours difference) and going out on the Columbia River in an hour to catch Chinooks and Coho's...St. J's can be good or it can be bad, depends on tides, winds, etc. I like to troll better than casting- Bill and I ususally do both there- he mainly casts while I mainly troll-

Congrats on the specks, Joe! Sorry to hear about your foot. Can you get out sooner if you wear waders, or is it too painful?

Tomorrow, I will wear a splint after the surgery. The surgeon told me today that I wear the splint for four weeks.
Perhaps I will take a regular kayak (not Hobie) after removing the splint.
