Lately I have been exploring St. Mary's county. There are so many great places there and I have only been to a few. I have been wanting to check out St. Jerome's creek and the bay out of Buzz's marina. I checked the tide for when I would be able to go on Sunday and it did not look good but I decided to go just to get a feel for the area.
I arrived a little after noon and the tide was just about slack. I paddled out to marker 6 in the creek and started trolling on my way to the inlet. I saw small fish on the FF mainly on the bottom. I was using 3" gulp on one rod and BA shad on the other. I had a couple of tugs along the way. When I arrived at the inlet there were many fish hitting the surface out from the sandy edge. I started to work the 3" gulp out from the shoreline and started to connect with a bunch of small stripers. This was fun for a bit but I wanted to explore some more.
I tried trolling more of the inlet and the rocks around the house with the red roof. I didn't see much action or anything on the FF. By this time the tide was completely slack and the bay was flat. Some of the guys returning from fishing said they were catching nice size blues at the lighthouse. Because the bite was slow I decided to get some exercise and paddle out there. It didn't look that far but it kinda was.
When I arrived at the light house there were fishing boats coming and going. Most said they had been catching blues and stripers. I caught a small blue on the way there. While moving around the lighthouse trying to find the submerged rock pile that one of locals told me about I occasionally saw some big fish on the FF. I only stayed out there for a little bit before returning back to the inlet. The same small stripers were still there. I tried trolling some more of the channel for bigger fish without success. I was pretty tired from all of the paddling so I decided to call it a day. I definitely want to go back during an incoming tide. I think that might have been the most distance I have kayaked in one day (around 9 miles). My arms feel like they are filled with concrete.
