  • Holy Wind! PLO 9/22

Fished 12 hours on Sat, 6:30 - 6:30. All I can say is HOLY WIND! When I pulled up to the launch I saw a 21ft boat coming in to dock. It took him easily 15 minutes to simply dock the boat in the wind, and at that point I looked over into the inlet (first time at plo) all I saw were white caps in the inlet. Hmmm, this didn't look anything like the pleasant videos I've seen on MKF.

I switched off hunkering down behind each jetty till the wind calmed down enough to move up behind the rock piles. At one point there were 2-3ft waves crashing the wooden poles nest to the rock piles.

Later in the day it calmed down and when I left as the sun was setting it was peaceful and serene. I worked for my fish.

Met up with <MIKE> and fished most of the day with him. Awesome fishing with you, we'll have to do it again.

I caught a ton of spot on fishbites, I took sabiki rigs and divided them into 3 rigs.

Everything else was caught on jig heads and gulp mullets 4".

First ever Red Drum and first croaker of the year. No Specks.

Mike and I worked the point where I caught my biggest drum of the day. Then trolled half way out to the buoy jigged our way back, found the rock pile I was advised about and made our way back to the beach rock piles and into the inlet.

The fish turned on at about 4-5ish at the inlet, Mike and I caught a ton of stripers and puppy drum, we were tearing them up. Was an awesome ending to getting pounded all day in 3ft seas.

12 hours, don't know how many miles, 20knot winds (?) covered in salt, beat and tired.

Congrats on your first red! They're fun.

I was in sheltered st Jerome Creek yesterday and it was rough and windy. Can't imagine PLO. Looks like you has some great fishing nonetheless, nice going. Nice pics too, thx!

First off, camelbird is the energizer bunny. I can't believe you paddled in that crazy wind for 12 hours.

In the past, I've used a cast net to catch bait fish but I have never used a minnow trap. I stopped by Bass Pro on Friday night to pick one up. I had read mixed reviews on the metal ones - rusting in salt water and not staying closed. When I got there I noticed they had a collapsible one made out of a fabric like mesh. My only concerns were that you couldn't open it as wide as the metal ones and it's longterm durability. It was only $10 so I bought it.

I arrived at the ramps just before noon and baited the trap with a slice and a half of chopped up bread and dropped it in one of the shallow pools of water on the right side of the walk path leading to the bathrooms. After I got my kayak ready to launch I returned and the bread was completely gone and the trap had about 5 dozen minnows in it (apparently these minnows really love honey oat bread). I threw about 2 dozen small ones back. Trap worked well and the nice part is it folds up and doesn't take up much room on the kayak.

Caught reds, blues, croaker and striper - used minnows, squid, gulp and a redfish magic. Still in search of the elusive specks and keeper flounder.

camelbird, It was really nice fishing with you. I'm glad I got to see you catch your first red.

Great report. I was wondering how you guys were doing. As I made breakfast, I notice the flowers and trees in my yard blowing around. My house is really protected from wind, so I knew you guys were going to have it tough. Congrats on your first redfish, Justin. I find catching them to be extremely addictive.
