I met John (SurfDog) and at the Wawa this morning on Rout 50 just west of Anglers. We took off across the Bay Bridge at 6:00am. We were going to try one of two Queen Anne's public boat landings on the Wye River. We visited Bennett's Point Landing first, but the predicted 7-11 mph winds were more like 15 to 25 mph. We went to Bryantown Landing, and the weather was just as bad. The temperature varied in the morning from 56 degrees to 59 degrees but would eventually get up to 70 degrees with the sunny skies. Seeking shelter from the winds, we decided on Weems Creek. When we got to Weems Creek, the surrounding land made the water calm and made the winds feel like 3 to 5 mph within the creek. I launched with SurfDog not far behind and immediately fished a few yard to the right where I landed a 12 inch rockfish and a 14 inch and 8 inch pickerel. All of my fish for the day were caught using a simple spinner with a 1/8 ounce round jig head tipped with a 1 inch light green curly tail grub.
I continued to fish the shoreline on my way to the mouth of Weems Creek. I continued to catch perch up to 10.5 inches. When I made it to the mouth of the river at the Severn. I turned left and went up the Severn for 5 mins and entered another creek on the left called the Cove of Cork. I fished the shadow areas, again tossing my jig to the shoreline and jigging it back in a popping motion. The fish seemed to attack my bait on the violent jerk or at the slight slack right after the jerking motion. On one of my cast at the edge of the shoreline, I hooked up with a 17 inch pickerel. Three pickerels in one day, six 8 to 12 inch rockfish and 48 white perch. By 11:00 am John and I were headed back to shore.
