Flats report 9/29

[Yak Fish]

Hit the Flats at sun up this morning and fished until about 2PM. Got roughly 20 fish or so, 1 keeper. Most were around 14-16". This is the first fall that I've fished the flats so I don't know how it normally goes so I'm out doing a little research. Let the record show that at this time I couldn't find bigger fish. I'm assuming I'll have better luck as the temp cools, but maybe the larger fish are only on the flats in the spring...dunno. This is true of the other areas I've fished for fall rockfish. I'll keep trying to see what I find.

I found schools of fish where I'd get a flurry and then action would drop off...and then another flurry. It took work to find them. Trolling small rapalas and the mini umbrella rig worked for me.

I've been wondering about the flats since we went there in the spring and caught some nice ones. Thanks for the report. 1 keeper, nice!

In was wondering the same thing about the Flats. Have not fished there other than during spring. Was thinking about hitting there next week.

There were a few boats out there jigging on a drift. That's not exactly my style. They caught a few but I caught more
You have to keep moving until you find them, and if you find one, there'll be more. A good search bait was a three inch rapala.
I wouldn't get too excited because although I had a great time on a great day, I wanted some larger fish. Almost took home two keepers but one was just a hair under, ah.

I forgot to mention that the water temp was 70 degrees on the flats.
