  • Harbor Hospital 9/29 & 30

Social obligations kept me hanging closer to Baltimore this weekend and a friend of mine had heard a good report from Harbor Hospital so I gave it a shot on Saturday evening (solo) and sunday morning with my buddy. Saturday evening I arrived and began trolling the different areas that were productive last fall. Followed the channel out to the Caspa pier then turned east and trolled along the ferry bar channel and up along the rip rap shoreline before cutting north across the channel and fishing along Ft McHenry and working my way back. Not much action except for when I stopped to jig some old pilings. The white perch were in there thick and were whacking an 1/4 ounce gold spoon jigged vertically. The only other fish from the evening were a 12 inch bluefish, an 8 inch rock and a foul hooked bunker. Lots of 4-6 inch bunker scattered around the area but didn't see any fish busting 'em up.

Sunday Morning, launched at 0630 and following my buddies lead went straight out to the rip rap and started throwing jerk baits along the shore. I also did some ltj with soft plastics and jigged my gold spoon some more. The action wasn't hot and heavy but I managed a few rock, biggest at a fat 22 inches, a bunch of perch and a 16 inch redfish. My buddy ended the day with a few white perch and 8 rock over 10 inches with a best around 20 inches. Not bad too bad and the redfish was a nice surprise.

    Good fishin

Sweet report. I like seeing the stripers fattening up during this time of the year. They seem to fight harder, too.

Thanks Wayne. Do you know if the warm water discharge is flowing? Last time I was there (during the winter) it was not.

Depends on which one you are talking about... From my limited understanding the discharge from the incinerator runs whenever they are burning garbage. I understand there was another one for the BGE plant that I believe has been shut down and from the sounds of it there is at least one more I haven't located yet.

The last one might be Bethlehem Steel, but I'm not 100% certain of that.

Indeed... I think the one I was looking for last time was the incinerator one, near the railroad swing bridge. I guess they weren't burning anything at the time. As the water gets cooler, I'd like to find some easily attainable discharges to fish during the winter.

Nice report! I was out there this morning, but only managed 6-7 dink rock up to 12" and a bunch of white perch with some of them being decent sized. It was really strange, in the 5-15 foot depth my FF was blank, but in 30-40 feet it was lit up, but I couldn't get anything to bite in deep water. I'm wondering if it was just really large schools of bunker...

I too fished the HH area on Sunday30, 11:00am-2:00pm, pretty much a couple of hours on both sides of low tide. Definitely not the best time to be fishing the Middle Branch. All I caught were several dink wperch and dink stripers. A pesky wind kicked up around 1:00pm or so Lots of small tin boats fishing the area too so word must have gotten out about there being some decent stripers in the area. But the Patapsco in famous for "here today, gone tomorrow". Heck, those stripers could be just around the next point or 5 miles away.

Seriously!? I never would have guessed. I've fished there tons and haven't caught anything but stripers, w and y perch, and catfish.

I checked my previous logs of HH and I've done best when the water is in the 60-45 degree range, which was mid-late october into the end of Nov. A couple of weeks ago my findings were the same as what you guys are saying.

must have just missed you sunday as I arrived just in time for the winds to pick up . couldn't get my anchor to hold me under the bridge but did fell a few good taps as I drifted through. ended up doing a soft drift between the launch and the hospital one cast off the shore just to avoid the big blow 30 more ft from shore. looked like lots of perch working the surface but they didn't want what I had to offer
maybe next time I'll get a calm day and remember to pack the depthfinder

Zimm - We met at the HH ramp. I was pulling out my green canoe in the same launch slot where you were putting in. The wind did pick up noticeably during the early afternoon. That, plus the gathering clouds and scarcity of fish, convinced me to take out early.
