  • Weems creek 10/7/12

I fished weems yesterday afternoon/evening in the rain. I paddled upstream to fish my usual spots from last year. This was my first time fishing Weems this year. I worked the shorelines and caught some decent perch here and there, using my favorite lure. After releasing a 7" perch, I had a furious hit & run...I knew it wasn't a perch. Turned out to be a feisty pickerel! My first one ever. It was around 15 inches or so.

After a couple more perch in a different spot, I got slammed again. Another pickerel! He ran left...did a nice tail walk, then spit my lure clean the opposite way. It was fun on my light tackle.

I ended the evening cold and wet, it's 6 perch in the 8-10" range. Fun times. Always a peaceful trip on Weems.

Way to land a new species! I have never been on Weems creek but it sounds like a nice place.

Congratulations on your first pickerel. This should be an excellent fall and winter fishing for them. Many of the Severn creeks and coves have good pickerel habitat. I caught pickerel in at least 8 different Severn tributaries last winter. You are on your way!
