Nice Severn rockfish! I intended to launch from Jonas Green around noon, but the wind was blowing too hard for me to spend much time in open water in a 9'3" kayak (my Malibu Mini-X). Instead I launched at Tucker St. I spent a few minutes jigging the oyster bottom near the creek mouth, but did not feel comfortable in the full wind exposure. I headed back in the creek. I trolled my usual route through outer Weems, then above the bridges into upper Weems. I did not get a single bite on the troll today -- the first time this has happened in several months.

I tried casting to quite a few of my preferred shoreline spots. Most came up empty today. I did find two small areas that held fish. Each of them was not much bigger than the the floor space of a one-car garage. I did manage 4 pickerel to 20", two perch (one at 11"), and a 13" redfish. I did not catch a single rockfish today. Even up in the sheltered sections of the creek, the wind was swirling. It was really annoying when the wind would push me one way, then change and push me back the other way a moment later. It took a lot of small paddling strokes to keep in position.

I have not used one of my more successful lures (Strike King micro-king in sun perch color) for several months. I tied it on today. Two of my pickerel hit that lure. The other fish hit a 2" Gulp minnow grub.

Yeah John the wind did start whipping us around pretty good. When we launched around 7 or so it was bearable. But the bite was still tough in the main river too. We tried deeper waters first thinking they might hold a little deeper, but no luck. I didn't even see the normal bait balls around the bridge structure. Guess it was "hide out" day on the Severn. At least it wasn't really cold out there.

I launched at Jonas Green around 13:30. It was windy and there were 1-2 foot swells in the main channel. I was marking plenty of fish and had quite a few hits but no hook-ups. I was using 1/2 - 3/4 oz jig heads and 6" swim shads. I suspect that the baits were a little big. The drift was fast and I only managed to catch the front half of a chewed up menhaden. Maybe tomorrow.
