  • Bay Bridge 10/19/12

Launched from G Dock this morning with mytmouse. We were supposed to meet at Wawa at 6:15. I arrived there at 6:11am, Eastern Daylight Time. Mytmouse was late :-/

We headed out in search of fish along the bridge pylons. As we launched, the rain came. It got downright nasty at times, but we pressed on. We worked the eastbound span while getting soaked. No hits...no marked fish. We went out a ways with nothing to show for it. Myt suggested we head over to the east side rock pile. I veto'd his suggestion, as it was too far with our time contraints. The alternate plan was to search for some structure we've heard about on the east side of the bay, north of the bridge.

On the way, I saw a few marks on my fish finder. I dropped down my rig (Specialized bait 2oz bunker spoon w/ teaser tied 12" above) and worked the bottom. FISH ON!!! A nice feisty blue, about 13". I was surprised to catch a blue. As I drifted north (incoming tide) my fish finder lit up like I've never seen it before. Literally, we were catching fish on every drop, often doubles...3x per drift. It was fun. Most of the fish were small stripers up to 14" in length. I tried working downstream of the school to find binnger fish, but to no avail. There were some nice perch in the school as well. Myt caught a nice 11 incher. After working this school for a good 30 minutes, we pressed on in search of bigger fish.

We found our destination and fished it for a lil bit...but nothing much was happening there. I caught another small striper. By 945, I began working the rock area near the base of the bridge (east side). I motored slowly against the current, casting along the shore. I made a cast right near the rocks...BAM!! Fish on! After setting the hook I made out patented call..."SAMMMMWWIIICCHHHHH!!!" I had a nice fighter on the end of my line. I was using my light action spinning rod, so I had a ball fighting the fish. I got the fish on board and yelled over to mytmouse "KEEPER ROCKFISH!!". It was a healthy 19 incher.

I was beyond excited, as my goal was to get a keeper striper from the yak. I don't normally specifically target striper, but I did today for a change. I guess it was worth toughing out the downpour afterall.

    We did 4.9 NM today

Yeah the rain was a bizzitch. SMH. I wanted to hit the rock piles but we didn't have the time. That track that veers way off was us venturing to the sewer pipe. We didn't mark any fish, or catch any there for that matter(Well Langston might have caught one) so we rolled out. It's really shallow there so I can see the topwater bite turning on there at times. I can't wait to get back out there. I want a biggun!!

That was a heck of a storm. I got to Jonas Green this morning and was fishing and had to head back in and sit in the car for 30min while the storm passed. Lightening and me in a kayak do not mix. Congrats on the striper.

Yes, you can. I used my map/gps app, and sure enough...you see the hump on the fish finder. Its really narrow structure, so staying on it in current is a bitch. I bet it would be easier with a more sophisticated depth/fish finder.

I didnt feel like zig zagging to stay over it, so I moved on after catching the small striper on it.

LOL he's safe Southerly. All MKF members are allowed the usage of the word SAMMMMwiiiichhhhh! As long as it is properly spoken and/or written. LOL The bridge provided little cover. The current was ripping so we were constantly pushed in between the 2 bridges. It didn't last too long, but surely long enough!
