Yesterday afternoon, I drove to Kent Island to visit the BOE Marine store and look at their marine electronics. For those of you not familiar with BOE, they are extremely knowledgeable about marine electronics and consistently offer very competitive pricing. While I was there, Jim Mayer, the owner, showed me his new side-business that is selling stand-up paddleboards and a locally made sit-on-top kayak called the Cuda. They will customize the Cuda to any color combination you want. Enough about that -- this is not intended to be a commercial for BOE.
After finishing at BOE, I drove a few minutes away to the public ramp at Kent Narrows. The water was almost flat calm with an outgoing (southbound) tidal current. I fished the bridge pilings for a few minutes, then went to the eddy next to the breakwater for some jigging. I had some good success there last fall, but without a fishfinder on my new kayak, I was fishing blind. After striking out, I decided to troll three rods (two with Gulps and one with either a larger swim shad or a Rapala diving plug). I trolled several times along the breakwater and caught several rockfish to 17". I left the deeper water and trolled just off of grassy shorelines above and below the bridge, picking up another few rockfish. The bite was slow, but it was a beautiful fall afternoon with calm seas. I saw a pair of bald eagles flying near the breakwater. I paddled steadily for about three hours to get a good workout. I arrived home and had the gear put away before dark.
