  • Upper Potomac 11/10/12

I fished the beautiful upper Potomac yesterday from around 8AM until 1:30PM. Here's what I found.

    1. Great weather.
    2. No wind.
    3. Crystal clear water.
    4. I saw 1 catfish in the middle of the river.
    5. I spooked one bluegill along a grassy bank.
    6. Found a bunch of winter type looking holes with nothing in them.
    7. I eventually found a mid-river hole with some minnows in it. The minnows were very small, 1 inch to around 1.5 inches.
    8. Didn't see a single smallie.
    9. Didn't catch any fish, but a great day to be on the river.

The Upper Potomac is a beautiful place! I fished it with a friend for the first time earlier this summer. The smallies were on fire that day. I think we ended up with somewhere around 40 between the two of us.

I think my fishing is pretty much over until April. I usually try to catch stuff in the winter, but never do. Maybe I should focus on trying to catch a rockfish before it gets too cold?

Absolutely! There should still be plenty of rock out there and it sounds like the big ones are on the way in.

No need to quit yet! I've had success at Jonas Green vertical jigging around the rubble from the old bridge, trolling and jigging the area around Harbor Hospital out to Ft McHenry and trolling around St Jeromes for rock this time of year. And that pick of a 48lb'er and some other nice fish would probably push me out to the BB and points south! I'd also be looking to soak some cut bait in the potomac and its tribs looking for some of the big blue cats and checking out some of the Patapsco Ponds looking for the schooled up crappie Good fishin!

Sums up my day too. Launched from Pennyfield, where before the storm the smallies were just about jumping in my boat. All gone on the 10th.
