  • Weems Creek 11/12/2012

Once again we were blessed with great weather on Veterans Day. The sky was sunny, the morning temperature was 49 degrees at 8:00am, rising to 70 degree during the mid day. The winds in the morning was only 5 to 8 mph, but I saw that it would increase in the afternoon to 15mph. I wanted to fish somewhere relatively close this time, so I decided on Weems Creek. Mustafa was gun ho to go, so he met me at the ram just after 8:00am. I launched and immediately headed up the creek to fish some of my previous areas and some new ones. I did not go all the way up the creek like my last outing here. I wanted to turn around and head towards the Severn River at the mouth of the creek.

But before I turned around and head in the direction of the Severn, I landed 5 pickerels, each one in a different location. I caught a 14.5 incher, (2x) 19 incher, one 20 incher and one 18.25 incher. As I headed to the mouth Weems Creek, I then hooked up with a 18.75 inch Rock Fish that was in shallow water near a shoreline grass line. At first, I thought that it was a big pickerel, but when I saw its silver skin, I knew I had a striper. It was a keeper and it was fat.

Mustafa was perfecting his jigging technique, but so far I did not see him land a fish. I decided to go to the next creek off of the Severn where I landed three more pickerels. Two were 19 inches, and one was 18 inches. I then switched to a heavier 1/4 ounce red jig head tipped with a white Gulp swimming mullet. I jigged deep in 10 feet of water, and hooked up with another striper. This one was only 16 inches. He smiled and took a picture before he was released. This creek proved productive for Mustafa also. He hooked up with 3 pickerels up to 19.75 inches I believe, which tied his previous Weems Creek total Pickerel catch. The bite after 12 noon seemed to be better than the morning bite.

Well, this was another good day. I caught 8 pickerels and 2 rockfish, only one rockfish was a keeper who I gave it to Mustafa. We were off the water at 2:30pm.

Congratulations on another good catching day. You make it look easy.

I had hoped to join you in Weems in the early afternoon. But after leaving home at 1:00, I detoured and launched into College Creek instead. I fished a lot of shorelines upstream and downstream of the Rowe Blvd bridge. Much of the potentially productive areas were heavily covered in leaves making casting and retrieving nearly impossible. Plus the wind was gusting so that I could not hold position on some of the areas I wanted to fish. After 1.5 hours of complete skunking, I found one small spot under some overhanging branches that held two pickerel. The area had a footprint smaller than my kitchen floor, but it was the only place where I could get the lure to suitable habitat without snagging leaves, and then found hungry fish nearby.

Last winter I did poorly in College Creek too. I am unlikely to devote much more effort there, at least not until the large mats of leaves are out of the way.

Thanks. I did return all of John Veil's babies, i.e., pickerels, to the water to give someone else some fun in catching them. I gave the rockfish to Mustafa, so he can make more of that delicious roast fish. I cannot wait to try it once I figure out where I can light a fire safely in my backyard.

Awesome report guys. I'd love to fish there, but unfortunately I have to transport my kayak using a small utility trailer.

If anyone needs a partner and would like to meet me someplace where I could transfer my gear to their truck, let me know.

The weather was beautiful. I wasn't getting any nibbles at first but the weather was making up for it. Martin was worried that Weems was going to leave a bad taste in my mouth, but when we went to the other creek, I started getting some action... even if I didn't get any bites, it was awesome being on the water... landing fish was a sweet bonus!

Here is the 19.5" fish I caught. The awesome part is I saw him chasing the lure about 4 feet from the boat. It was really cool seeing it zoom in and take a few bites from my lure and then finally engulf it...then I set the hook! I was using a 1/4 ounce chartreuse jig with a 3" chartreuse gulp swimming mullet. I was slow retrieving most of the day, when I switched to a fast retrieve that's when I started getting hits.

5 cinder blocks and you're good to go almost anywhere in your yard bro. The fire never get out past the blocks

It's always a good idea to Check. For a comparison, those outdoor fireplaces that are sold at Walmart produce more fire and heat than what you would use for roasting the fish. Also for comparison the fire that comes out of your charcoal grill when you start it is about the same as the fire that is used to roast.

Make sure to "box" the fire with the cinder blocks when you roast, both for safety and more efficient roasting.

And just like a grill, never leave a fire unattended!

Very true. I was told once that as long as the fire was controlled and I was in the act of "cooking", that no one would hassle me. That is sort of in direct conflict with my understanding of local codes that state "no burning", but who knows.
