  • Truxtun Park to Jonas Green in search of fish 11.18.2012

Waterbornerops07 (Sam) and I launched out of Truxtun Park today (Spa Creek) hoping to maybe catch some pickerel but we couldn't locate any fish in the creek. The wind was blowing pretty good from the north east. We ended up paddling through the wind all the way to Jonas Green in search of fish. Once we made it into the Severn on our way to Jonas Green we started marking fish between 20 and 30 feet of water but they all had lockjaw.

Shortly after arriving at the Jonas Green bridge we ran into J.A. Veil (first time meeting him; very nice guy). Just after I started to talk with him my rod tip started to bounce and it turned out to be an 18.5" Striper (2nd keeper striper for me this year and my first fish of the day). After J.A. Veil left I ended up catching two more. The biggest one was caught trolling along the bridge. With the way he hit I thought for sure it was a snag. All fish were caught near the bridge using a curly tail grub on a 3/8 oz jighead.

Nice work on the keeper stripers! John seems to bring them out in the Severn!

Mike made a good first impression on me. As I paddled back to Jonas Green, I could see two orange kayaks near the fishing pier. When I got close I said hello to the closer boat -- it turned out to be Mike. He set down his rod in order to paddle closer to me. While in the process of a short paddle, his rod began bouncing, resulting in a keeper rockfish. That was a pretty impressive introduction - if he can catch keepers while not really trying, he must be a good fisherman.

Nice work on those stripers. It is pretty amazing to catch fish of that size within a mile of the State Capitol.

        Shane -

Mike and Sam were fishing very close to where you caught your keepers last week. Those fish will be there for another month. Last year they moved out about the second week in January. Of course, you cannot keep any rockfish in Maryland after Dec 15.

Good to know John! I'll have to give them a try from the yak this coming weekend or on Black Friday.
