  • 2-22-13 OC Morning Star Long Trip (non kayak but wanted to share)

MetroMan, MytMouse , and myself have been awaiting the opportunity to try our hand at some Tautog and Seabass on the Morning Star with Captain Monty for some time. The Targeted 2/23/13 over a month ago to take this trip but was unable to book until the week of due to unpredictable weather. Looking at the extended forecast the week of we decided Friday Feb. 22nd was the best day to go. We were all excited to hit the road together at 1:30am to make it to the boat early as the trip was scheduled to be 5:30am to 5:30pm. They asked us to be there at 5:00am as they will leave early if everyone is there. After making our normal visit to WaWa we made it to the boat in time and left the dock in time to some very frigid weather. We steamed from the dock in darkness with 15 anglers. As we knew the ride out would be a good ways out we didnt realize how bumpy of a ride it would be out. Now to the good part. We steamed out 4 Hours.....Yes 4 hours to the first fishing hole. The boat supplied green crab but we brought some blue crab and shrimp just in case. Capt. Monty said that the fishing has been off and on as of late so we anchored up and dropped our lines. On the first drop a few anglers brought up some nice tog and a few LARGE Seabass. This was a great sign and within a few minutes MytMouse got on the board with a nice Seabass. At this point it was clear that they were a lot of LARGE Seabass down there and they were being caught all around the rail. Not long after MetroMan and I were on the board with some nice Black Seabass. WE stayed at our first fishing spot for about 2 hours and the Tog bite slowed a little so we left that spot and went another hour away. Once we got to the next spot the bite was hot and heavy with plenty of Large Seabass caught by everyone. MytMouse was into a good fight in which he thought it was a nice tog but ended up being a citation Black Seabass at about 22". Not a while later MetroMan hooks into something nice and pulls in a 25.5" BlackSeabass for his citation for the day. I will let them two post on there great day with pics. All three of us continued to fill our coolers with large black seabass as the tautog didnt cooperate with us yet as the seabass were taking whole green crabs . The blue crab and shrimp worked well too. MetroMan and I actually caught two huge bluefish to our surprise in the high 20"s. After that I baited a whole green crab on a double hook down and waited for a hit. Got a hit within seconds and after setting the hook I knew it was something good. Mind you we are in 100' of water and it took all I had to bring this fish up. It got to the surface and BAM My first ever tautog caught and it also managed to be a citation at 24.5". The rest of the trip continued with multiple citations of Seabass and Tautog. At the end of out trip we were all beat and ready to "try" and get some rest on the long ride back which was 4 hours and we made it back to dock around 7:00pm and headed back home. Enjoy the pics

Well since it ain't a kayak trip you were supposed to post this in the General section!! But since I was part of the group I won't get on you too bad... LOL!!! Man it was a ball out there!! That was just my second time on a charter and that was a LLLLOOONNNNNGGGGG ride to and from the spots! LOL But it was well worth it! I was amazed at the large number of well-above keeper fish that were caught. I saw people even throwing keepers back(black seabass) because they weren't satisfactory. LOL The tog bite was ok. There were at least 5 caught... one guy was really tuned in!! He was a regular on the Morning Star. But all of them were monsters, he actually won the fish pool. I will say this... I have no idea how guys go deep dropping on a regular basis... my arms were so sore after pulling up fish... even after bait checks!! We were getting down with 10, 12, and 20oz sinkers. Add that with the fact I was using my Avet and had to level the line... the leader couldn't come up soon enough!! LOL

If you ever get the chance to go with Monty... do it! It was a great experience for me! Just to see that blue ocean water and anchored up in what seemed the middle of nowhere! Monty even fished a bit with jigs going after black seabass and he also checked on us fisherman too!! It was so funny to hear him get as much enjoyment as putting us on the fish as he was catching them!! After seeing these massive Tog definitely has me ready to go after them this season!

What a fun time as usual. We were really excited for this trip, knowing that it would be our last shot at black sea bass prior to the season's 2/28/13 closure. Captain Monty put us on some nice fish. There were some HUGE tog that came over the rail. Luckily Foursteps was one of the guys who got one. Once I realized my tog luck wasn't gonna appear, I was just as content reeling up those quality sea bass. My largest measured in at 25.5" on the boat. It was a heck of a fight winching him up.

It was fun being on the Morning Star once again. Captain Monty is a really great guy. Its good talking to him when he comes down to fish with his patrons. This was a grueling 12hr trip. Cold temps, rough seas on the ride out...lack of sleep the night before. His long trips are not for the weak or inexperienced...that for sure. Everyone on the boat were experienced anglers. Having a boat full of nothing but experienced anglers makes it easier on everyone.

I cleaned all of my fish using my electric fillet knife. I love that thing. I left a couple of the fish whole...I want to try some new recipes.

We had just enough room in our cooler for our combined catch. Based on previous reports, we didn't expect the black sea bass action to be as hot as it was. I didn't get to take any video of fishing action, but I did throw together some clips of us prior to the trip, primarily for posting/sharing on my blog. I added my pics toward the end of the video..

Will do Shady. We didnt know what to expect on this trip as the reports lately has been hit or miss. Even the regulars on the boat said that some days its hot and some days they are not. This day happened to be VERY HOT. Would love to go with a bunch of us snaggedliners. Would make for an Epic trip.

You guys got some BAD fish....congrats!

I tried to get a trip on the M Star weeks ago, but they weren't taking reservations so I quit calling. I had four boat trips (Lewes and Rudee) canceled because of bad weather, but I have one scheduled at Rudee for the last sea bass trip of the month until the season reopens. After sea bass season closes, it'll be tog trips for me

                    Again, good work!

Tufnik we had to book our trip on Monday to go out Friday because of unpredictable weather. Now that I am hooked on tog now I would love to target more tog this spring from the kayak. I will be cooking my first tog fillets tonight. Looking for a good way to cook it .

My favorite is tog tacos. Fry them up with tempura in 1" x 5" strips and put them on a soft tortilla shell with some shredded cabbage and lettuce, avocado slices, diced tomato, and baja fish taco sauce, Yum!

                              4step,
Usually, for a first time meal, I prefer to keep the recipe simple because I want to taste/savor the fish and not all the spices, etc. For a simple recipe, my wife will coat the fish with flour (with added pepper and a pinch of salt) and fry until light golden brown. This gives me a good idea of how the fish meat really tastes. After that, I may go for follow-on recipes with different spices, sauces, etc.

For fish like sea bass and flounder, I prefer simple recipes because the taste alone is already excellent.
