The weather for the February Meet and Greet at the Susky was looking real bad weather wise earlier in the week. All day heavy rain on Saturday with wind gusts up to 34 mph were predicted, but as Friday came around the weather improved to 6 to 11 mph winds, and drizzle during the day with temperatures reaching 42 degrees.
When I left my house this morning, it was 33 degrees. I met Goody (Paul) at the McDonald's off of Route 95 and 175. We followed each other to the Jean Roberts Memorial Park in Havre De Grace. We arrived there at 7:40am. There were several other kayakers there like Shady and ChexOne. More kayakers arrived as the morning progressed. It was foggy with a light mist drizzle all morning. The water was calm, and the winds were light. I launched after I picked up my minnows from Shady. I fished around the railroad bridge marking plenty of fish. I was basically trying to jig using the perch rig that I made the night before. I did not get a single bite, so I moved further up river near Owens Marina were I located some yellow perch in 57 to 65 feet of water. I stopped jigging and just left my rod in the dead stick position. As soon as I saw the tip of the rod dip once or twice, I grabbed it and jerked the bait twice that caused the fish to strike and get themselves hooked. The fishing was good for me in that spot for 30 to 45 minutes, then all of the fish that was on my fish finder disappeared. In that time span I landed 1 keeper and 7 shorts. Other kayakers caught some yellow perch, but most were short with a keeper here and there. There were even a few nice catfish caught also. Since the bite stopped and my toes were starting to get cold, I decided along with Rockchaser, to head back to the ramp. It was already after 12 noon, and lunch was around 2pm. I counted 17 kayakers out there today. That was amazing considering the weather. Imagine if it was a warm and beautiful day.
After most of us got back to shore, 10 of us went over to the Tidewater Grill for lunch at 1:45pm. At the table Shady had a good idea that we should go around the table and introduce ourselves with our online name and real name so we would know who each of us were. Conversation flowed, and the jokes continued. Memory Maker (Rick) did not make it on the water, but he did join us for lunch. A good time was had by all. We all got back on the road around 4:30pm.
