Severn 3/3

Launched from Tucker St on Weems today right around 12:30, only caught 2 pickerel there on light jig heads and minnows. The biggest was 19''. Decided to move to another tributary of the Severn and was going with the wind out of the mouth of the creek. Got out of Weems a bit and decided I really didn't want to get caught with the higher winds and waves in my face on the way back in so I decided to turn around, and good thing I did. Took about 5 peddles into the wind and waves and my mirage drive stopped working. Pulled it out to see the rod on one of my fins had just snapped off right at the top rendering the mirage drive useless. Thankfully I brought a paddle and hadn't made the trip to another spot or it would have been a long wet paddle back to Weems into the wind.

Damn, that sucks! I've had bad luck in the past few months with my mirage drive too, snapping off both pedal shafts in two separate trips. Go to backyard boats and Dennis will fix you right up. Atleast you caught a couple pickerel.

That happened to me at the inner wall at cape Henlopen. Crazy! now Dennis at BYB will know its not just me that always breaks mirage drives.

Yea it definitely sucked but coulda been worse! Gotta get over to BYB and get that thing fixed this week. Prolly replace both rods if one of them was week enough to just snap like that.

Tough luck on the fins. That is one advantage we paddle power guys have -- no broken fins to worry about.

I'm glad you got two pickerel. I hope the bite will be plentiful next Sat.

I have broken both pedal arms, on the solid black center shaft assembly area snapped a piece off rendering it useless, bent both fin masts, cut open both fins, and still love that damn thing...thank god Hobie is so solid with their warranty.

That is a pain, but at least you got some fish. Did you bend the mast some time before it broke? I'd broken a couple in the past, bit only after hitting something and straightening it out afterwards.

Yea I did bend one before and put it in a vice to straighten in out. Can't remember if that was the one I fixed though. Either way, I think the pros of the mirage drive outweigh the few times you might have a break down on the water.
