Went to bed last night with other plans, but it was so beautiful out that the wife said "go ahead and go fishing" (of course she is sick, so it could have been delirium speaking----but lets call it inspiration). The tide turned at 10:50 so I took my time and arrived right at 10:45 to find the launch full of bass fishermen and the parking lot full. No ram launch for me so I found a little rocky beach and bounced the yak over the driftwood and I was off.
I paddled across the river to the general area Bill and i fished last year and marked lots of fish near the bottom at 27 ft, but too deep for my anchor set up. I kept searching and settled in at 17 feet and dropped my cut bunker. Initially I caught nothing, then I dropped a "fishbomb". The menhaden oil slick spread down stream for about 10 minutes and then BAM, a double. One of these fish had a wide flat head and I assumed it was my first flathead cat. To confirm, I sent a text to Ictalrus/Bill and soon it was determined I had a monster white catfish...also a first and a MD citation at 20.2 inches (it weighed nearly 5 pounds)! My first citation as well.
I caught a couple more in the slick but it was fairly erratic. I am quite sure it was the wrong spot and the only reason I called them in was the fish bomb. I tried going deeper, but I did not have enough line and the anchor did not grab. I moved back in but downstream a bit on a bar nearer to deep water and from there it was one after another. The crazy thing was somewhere on shore some little girls were watching and would start screaming "he caught another fish!" Oddly I never could tell where they were.
The weather was great. The fishing was steady but not too easy to be no fun and I made a few observations
Here are a few more pics. Oh....fresh blue catfish are so delicious

- Ictalrus/Bill is a good fishing partner even when he is babysitting. Thanks for the help today guy!
- for the first time I truly had much more success with a fishfinder rig than a 3-way swivel set up. I had never really noticed a difference, but today the fishfinder outcaught the swivel 3-1
- Blue catfishing, in good weather, is a pretty satisfying experience. I shouldn't wait til there is nothing else biting to target them.
- Blue catfish are alot of fun to photograph. It is the color I guess and their goofy eyes
