  • Susquehanna Flats 04/13/13 (always have a plan B)

Met Rob and Kodi up at the Susquehanna Flats yesterday 04/13/13. This was a Striper scouting expedition getting ready for the "Susquehanna Flats Kayak Fishing Jamboree" next weekend. This time of year the Stripers will migrate up out of the Chesapeake Bay into the Flats area to feed up on herring and shad just prior to heading up the rivers to spawn. When the Stripers are there en masse it can make for some fantastic kayak fishing.

We got underway around 9:00 A.M. and paddled off to the flats. I spent a lot of time bombing away with a big lipless crankbait and a big jerkbait looking to cover some water. I got a definite hit on jerkbait (but no hookup) in the morning but that was it. In the afternoon Rob and Kodi had to head off home. I stayed out there and kept bombing away for another couple of hours. Around 3:00 P.M. I realized that all the power boats had vacated the premises. Not a good sign. Word gets around fast when the bite is on and boats magically materialize out of thin air when you are on them (as we found out last year!). Around 3:30 P.M. I decided to go to plan B.

My plan B was to fish some of the docks around the area for largemouth bass with a football jig and craw trailer

Yes, that one was a real tub! Full of eggs and full of whatever she has been chowing down on. I've noticed these bass that live in a tidal environment do not get really long, they just develop a really stocky build.

        Great catch on the bass.
