  • Wilson Bridge 4/14/13. Same ole same old

Time constraints didn't really allow for me to go elsewhere. This location is so convenient. With only a few hours to spare, this is where we went. I'm pretty certain this is gonna be my last time fishing here for a while on my monster blue cat quest. This structure seems to be favored by the 20" class fish. Fun pullage nonetheless.

Your vids are always great to watch Metro! We must have just missed you yesterday. Sparky1423, YakinFish18, Rockchaser and myself fished it from 7-11 yesterday morning. All did well, I managed 5 blue's and 2 channels 16-19" on cut up chicken. Threw a few bigger ones back and had plenty drop off.

Thanks! If you guys were out ther with Rockchaser, you were bound to have a good day lol!! We got there at 2:45. I had to work till 2.

The grilled hot dogs got me the first fish. I switched to bloodworm, then felt that familiar "peck", resulting in bare hooks shortly thereafter. I switched to a smaller hook, and lo and behold...baby white perch. I finally switched to chicken breast and caught fairly consistently for the rest of the afternoon.

I actually catch a 12" rockfish on a piece of chicken yesterday. Plenty of blue cats...all must be brothers and sisters.

Thanks! Hit me up when you go again and I'll join you. Does that stay productive all year for cats? Any other species abundant around the bridge worth targeting?

There are white perch there, but they are small right now. I have no idea if they get bigger in abundance there. This is my first season dedicating any fair amount of time there.

Have you tried cutbait? Maybe only the 20" class fish bite the chicken. I know I used to use clamsnouts when shorefishing and did great numbers wise, but maxed out in 5-10 pounds range. When I started using cutbait (herring when it was legal, white perch if they were around) I started catching cats in the 10-20 pound range. Larger blue cats are a little more predatory then smaller blue cats and most channel cats. Most big cat hunters use big chunks of gizzard shad. You can probably get some shad or other cut bait at the DC fishmarket.

Cut or small gizzard shad (or other local indigenous species) are the best bait for LARGE blues.

Yeah, I am familiar with the use of cut bait for blue cats. This trip really didn't provide me with much time to go get good bait, nor go to the actual areas ive been scoping for the bigguns. Soon enough though...

We definitely started catching bigger catfish with white perch fillet than with menhaden, chicken or bloodworm
