  • 2013 Crabbing

This is my first year with my Trident 15. Prior to getting my kayak, I watch many YouTube videos of people crabbing and wanted to try that. I know the crab season has already started, and I know that on Wednesday only hand lines can be used. I plan to use hand lines and circle traps. Does anyone have any advice? Has anyone been crabbing this year?

    Thanks,
    Silverhair

Havent done any crabbing from my yak yet but will this season with stackable traps. I know Moc on here is the crab whisperer so he'd be the one to talk to

Plan to give it a go for the first time this year Memorial Day weekend. I just use 9 small box traps and stack them using and old broom handle through a scupper in the tankwell area. I will be crabbing in the Severn. If the crabs are there, I can usually catch plenty for me and the wife in a couple hours.

Slick idea on how to store the traps with the broom through the scupper. How are you planning to store your catch on your kayak?

I put the broom sticks in the flush mount rod holders, 5 traps on each side. It works great.

Dave when I had my trident 13 and used traps I would stack about 16 or so as tight as I could (pre baited before hitting the water) and lay them down between my legs. The paddle is not far from the launch so it wasnt that bad. I would put a cooler in the tank well behind me . I bought some commercial crabbing gloves which allowed me to grab the crab with my hand an put it in the cooler. Before the gloves I would just use my crab tongs. Good luck this year. Havent been out yet this year but plan to the beginning of June. I run a trotline but I will probably use my traps my first outing as a recon trip. That is what I did last year and the crabs were thick early (mid May).

I put the crabs in a cooler (Outback has a lot of room)

I like the glove idea. When I had my OK Big Game, things would get exciting when a crab would get into the kayak around my bare legs.

Dogfish Ive had that happen and lets just say Crab-1 and Foursteps-0. I was using traps and one of the doors was slightly open and the crab came on through in my lap. Natural reaction said to swat it away.......i happen to take the shall point straight in my thumb. OUCH!! It went pretty deep. Been wearing gloves ever since.
