  • Severn Crabbing/Perching 6/1

Launched from Jonas Green this morning around 830 to try for some crab. Headed across the river and set out my 10 traps in 6-14 FOW. In summary, I caught only two crabs, one about 5.5" and one about 6", both went back. I will probably try again in two weeks.

In between checking the traps, I hit a couple piers for perch. I caught about 5-6 dinkies to start and also a 5" croaker. Finally, decided to try the Shady side of a pier and slowed my jig down a lot to be just barely bouncing off the bottom. This was the answer. I caught 2 over 8", 5 over 9", and 2 over 10" and invited them all home for dinner. The bite today was somewhat uncharacteristic for Perch, it was very light and subtle. Lure of the day was 1" gulp alive minnow on tiny roadrunner jighead. Back at the beach at JGSP at 10:30.

Here's my best of the morning

Medicyacker and I floated the park today after 10:00.... The croaker bite was on. Mostly +10". I only got one perch and that was around 6".
The most hits was down in the cove upriver on the same side as the park.

Bloodworms all the way. Fished a double drop with a 1.5 oz pyramid.

Nice job Ryan, I hope the perch were well behaved at the household!

The severn looks like another fishery for me since the flats are dead. I hear rockfish could be in the area along with the perch, If you don't mind---are the rockfish over the entire launch area or are they more concentrated at the bridge or maybe a channel?? I think I would not have a problem finding the perch and croaker.

During the season, I've only ever caught small Striper in the Severn, but I usually don't really target them because the Perch fishing is so good there. I've caught a few nice Stripers there in late fall/winter jigging over the old drawbridge pilings.

Sparky, have you fished the flats lately? Nothing doing? I haven't been able to make it up a second time in the open season.

You're not missing anything. When out yesterday to all my spots and nothing. I did manage a 17" and a 10" early heading south towards the tree islands on the edge of the channel. I was trolling three rods with my best lures...covered 8 miles. It's not looking good. I went to lapidum Friday and they did limit out quickly early with tube and worm trolling around brother and sister rock. I am thinking it's more current and oxygen, who knows. I was just farting around with perch and catfish and did not bring my big gear.

Thanks for the report Ryan. Man I want the crabs to start running! Definitely late this year.
