  • 6/15 Severn River Croaker

Launched out of Jonas Green Park, used raw shrimp. There were five other kayakers on the water fishing, everyone was pulling in fish. I brought home 15, had another 5 on that were throwbacks or jumped off the hook. The biggest fish measured in just under 14", with most around 10-12". It was one of the best days of fishing I've had so far this year.

    Hey Bro! Awesome Job!

I hope you don't mind adding to your thread. Figured since it was the same topic and day, no reason to make a new thread.

I launched out of Tucker St (Weems) and headed to the Severn at 8:30am. I wanted to avoid the crowds that build up on the beach at JG around the afternoon when coming back in.

I met up with Fish (Steve) and his friend (Paul) at the mouth of the severn. We were fishing a top and bottom rig with salad shrimp (cooked) tipped with blood worms on size 4 hooks. I was using 2oz on the bottom.

We first went to the area around marker #2 (Sorry I don't know its official name) but didn't mark any fish. We then went to another spot close to shore that we were told about and caught a lot of little croaker (sorry I would be more specific but we didn't find the spot ourselves). We then went to the bridge closest to JG and caught a few with only one keeper size at 9". Fish caught a healthy 12" there.

We then decided to go back to the Oyster bed by marker #2 and it was a little bit better. There is some really nice structure there but be careful of snags. I got snagged twice really badly, one of which had a 9" white perch that tried to take cover in the structure. I opened the bale for a couple of seconds and left it alone a bit. The fish came out on its own and I reeled it in. The other snag was a mess and I tried getting it out for 10 minutes. I was soo worried that the rod was going to break so I was ready to cut my line. Before I took that step both snelled hooks broke off of their line and the rig was free. I don't know if there were fish that caused this by taking cover or I just snagged something on both hooks. I think this area would have been more productive earlier in the day or later at night. We were fishing there right around noon.

I went home with 4 keeper size croaker 9"-12" and two white perch that were by products of the crocker hunt.

Not the best day for us but still an enjoyable one!

If you don't mind me asking frettr00, where were you most productive (general area)? PM me if you're not comfortable taking about the area on the forum.

Nice report Abu, i'll PM you. I went out again today, but with much less results. Striper_MIKE was fishing right next to me and was pulling em in one after another, using the same bait. It seems like the bigger ones came in during the evening, mostly had shorts fishing the morning in the same area.

Nice meeting you frettr00. Ended up with 7 in the 9-12 inch range. Just happy to get on the water with such perfect conditions and a little pullage!

Goody and myself fished there last Monday with good results. Most of our perch were jigging the piers to the north of the beach. All of our croaker were caught hugging the middle piling of the bridge and 10ft back towards the beach. This piling had no letter. The four pilings to the right of us were labeled N--A--V--Y

I'll have to try the bridge next time I'm out there as long as conditions aren't too rough. The water gets pretty deep out there. I was seeing mid 40s on my depthfinder passing under so that would be interesting pulling up a decent sized croaker from those depths....
