  • Clark's Landing/Solomon's Father's Day

Chexone and I launched early from Clark's Landing- tide was still coming in and the wind was getting up- crossed the channel (110 feet deep in the middle) to the long skinny point before Solomon's Route 4 bridge- about a mile or two trip- lots of boat traffic and fast movers out yesterday- anyway we got there and started fishing- lots of smaller stripers so we slowed down the presentation- I got a big perch of at least 12 inches, flipped off while I was holding the leader trying to get a good hold on it to take the hook out-then Mike hooked up at the point with something big on light spinning tackle- he was fighting the fish for about thirty minutes when I heard him say "RAY-" wasn't long before I had a big ray hooked too- nasty things took me forty minutes to finally calm it down with a billy club so I could take the hook out- bow hunters were shooting rays so we knew we were in a big pod of them- they were everywhere- fished a while longer before throwing in the towel to the bat rays- we headed across the river to the east side and fished the boat docks and shallow beaches- found two inlets back to creeks- caught stripers in both inlets- lots of company out there- boats everywhere- about 11:30 we headed back to the launch- all in all not a bad day- caught lots of fish- just not what we we after-

My son and I were around the bend from you. Launched under Rte. 4 Bridge. Fished University Pier at tip of Solomon’s. Plenty of small rock to 17”. (Last week had a couple to 24” there) Moved to south side of Rte 4 Bridge pylon and sandbar. (Caught a bunch of small rock, croaker etc) then on to the burned out Navy Pier. Area around the pier was paved with croaker, perch, spot. Son also hooked a skate. Dragged him all over the river.

      Death Rays

It was a BEAUTIFUL day, despite the rays. I was in bliss just floating around out there.

I caught 3 perch and 3 small stripers... and 3 rays. Well, I didn't really catch them... it's more like they caught me! [video of ray breaking my rod below]

We saw a couple of other kayakers, but they were closer to Clark's Landing, and they weren't fishing so it could not have been you we saw- the point has some wonderful structure, really dramatic drop offs- near vertical and it is nine feet deep 25 feet off the beach down close to the point- shame the rays kept us tied up- we saw lots of marks on the sonar- I was hoping to hit the speckled trout and redfish but like Mike said- it was a great day on the water- I enjoy fishing with him- wished we could have met up and fished- next time!

I hate them things. Last year I went to the BB with my spankin brand new shimano rod. While jigging the pilons I hooked a ray. Fought him for 5 minutes trying to get my lure back and CRACK, there goes my rod. It ended up snapping my line, lost my lure, and broke my rod.

I ended up taking it back to Bass Pro and told them it broke while fighting a bass. I got a new one

Stinkin rays! Ron suggested I take mine back to BPS too, so I'm gonna do that... I'll say it was a Flatty.

The closest thing to indestructible rods for rays and such are W&McGill sglas flats blue rods- bend them double and no problem-caught lots of rays- no issues-

Sucks about the rod Mike! I had one snap my tourney series bps rod during the CCA tourney too! My braid got stuck on the front handle and snap went the rod! I hate those things!
                Used to fish more.

                  OUCH!!

Sorry about the rod bro! I do have to say that I appreciate your attitude about it! You just laughed it off instead of cursing up a storm! Much respect!

I have to say....while I didn't snap any rods, I did cuss a blue streak every time I was fighting another...bleemping....ray- the one monster that was hooked dead center of the right nostril, soaked me with water beating the wings against the side of my Outback- that irritated me enough that I used my metal boga grip as a baseball bat to administer calming efforts on the head area of the ray until it stopped beating its wings- naturally, my boga grip is no longer functional...

Ive had 5 carbon lites. I used to get them 40% off working at bass pro.. ive broken all 5... most recent.. I was hooked into a fish,, the fish jumped.. my 3/8 oz bullet weight shot up the line, hit my rod tip and broke the rod in half...

Others ive broke setting the hook. Ive broke casting.. lol ....

I still have 2 left, but im trying to shy away from. . I used to catch nice rockfish and catfish, bass, rays, anything.. never had a problem.. i quit bass pro and now they just keep breaking and breaking and breaking.....
