  • Weems Creek and Severn River

Went to Weems Creek this morning at 6 am. Caught the usual amount of perch, plus a croaker in the creek. Went out into the Severn, did some bottom fishing, caught some croaker and spot. Trawled a line behind my kayak - and caught my first striper (from a kayak) - 12".

Stayed till 12:30 when I decided I had had enough of the larger boat traffic. Was a good day on the river, nice weather, and good fishing.

Oh yeah, there will be many more stripers to come. That little 12" striper is a member of the really big 2011 year class. Right now they are all ranging a couple inches either side of 12". In another couple of years these 12"ers will be nice fish to catch.

Way to go Laura. Nice work on catching those four species. In addition to those species, the bluefish are just now starting to show up in the Severn. I fished with two other guys on Fri morning near the mouth of the river. Each of us caught some tiny blues (skinny and 4" to 5" long). I don't think I ever saw them that small before. But they will grow. They are fun to catch, but they can wreak havoc on soft plastics and expensive Gulps.

              Nice work!

              John,
Hopefully the reds move back in the Severn again this summer, so we can catch Reds, Whites, and Blues!

I launched from Jonas this morning and caught several nice croaker and perch along with a couple spot, one small striper and my first ever menhaden on the hook! Yep, it was snagged but almost in the mouth.

Congrats on the Rock Zeebyrd! I got my first one near mouth of Weems too. I still haven't caught a keeper though.

Keep trying, there are plenty of them here. When the schoolies move out in early fall the 18-mid 20" fish seem to be easier to catch. Try jigging around the old bridge pilings or trolling channel edges.

Congrats on your first kayak rock, Zeebyrd!
