  • July Meet and Greet 07-13-2013

The weather cleared up from the weekday rain. The temperature was going to reach 83 degrees with only a 30 percent chance of scattered thunder storms and partly sunny skies. The tide in Ocean City would be incoming all morning. For the Maryland Kayaking Meet and Greet for July, we were expecting close to 16 members, old and new. Some of the members went down a day or two in advance such as DaddyG, Russ498, and Medicyaker. I left early in the morning and met up with Coop1486 and Kitkatyaker in Easton at 4:45am. at the WAWA. We headed down to ocean city and met the other kayakers at Lucky Angler Bait & Tackle Inc. around 6:30am. At the bait shop we met Slobber Bob, Hemingway, Chexone, Sun, DaddyG, Medicyaker and Russ498.

After getting some supplies at the Lucky Angler, we headed out to the boat ramps at Sunset Avenue. We hit the water around 7:30am. The winds were only 8 mph. The inlet did have fast currents that made for a fast drift back towards the channel. Many of the kayakers scattered in different directions. Some went to the Route 50 bridge. Some when to the inlet and some stayed in the channel. Pinch even join us according to other kayak members.

I fished near the end of the docks and got nibbles that turned out to be spots. I caught the spots on an 8th ounce jig head with a chartreuse 3 inch Gulp Swimming Mullet. I then fished the last pilings of the last pier out of the marina and hooked up with a nasty giant toadfish. At this point I saw Tufnik and another MKF kayaker. I offered Tufnik the toadfish , but he turned it down. ha ha. I fished the inlet and found a spot that was 30 feet deep. I tossed my jig head down into the depths tipped with white Gulp Swimming Mullet. Within seconds of jigging I hooked up with a heavy fish that was peeling line. It turned out to be a giant clear nose skate, not big big flounder. I battled the skate for 20 minutes until he broke my jig head off of the leader at the side of the boat.

The current for the inlet got stronger later in the morning. I only managed a 13 inch flounder in the inlet. Chexone, caught the first keeper flounder or the morning. More flounders would be caught later in the morning. Sun caught a keeper flounder in the inlet. Sun also caught a second keeper in the channel to the right when you exit the marina. Slobber Bob caught a keeper, and so did Hemingway. The happiest man of the morning was Tom aka Medicyaker. He caught an 18 inch keeper flounder in the inlet which he so wanted badly. Other fish were caught like skates, spots, small rockfish, a spider crab, oyster toads and sea robins.

It was 12:15 pm and some of the kayakers reported over channel 68 on their marine radio that hunger was calling, so 9 of us went to the Pizza Tugo's. Lunch was fun as usual. After lunch, DaddyG, Russ, Coop, Slobber Bob and myself went back out to fish the southern channel area. I hooked up with another flounder measuring 15 inches...darn, an inch shy of a keeper. Fishing was slow and the outgoing tide was really moving. All of us were getting tired of fighting the current, and with a lack a bites, we called it quits and headed back to the ramp.

It was a fun M&G and even after all of the weeks rain, fish were still caught.

I believe this is the list of those that made it....there was another MKF member who came, but I cannot remember his name...my apologies.

Nice report, moc. I would have joined you late that afternoon, but I had enough butt pain by then.

I was on the water at 0800 hrs. Jigged plastic/jighead at the inlet, bridge, north of the bridge along the channel and at the Thorofare in the bay. I was back at the Inlet after 3 pm, but the current was getting strong so I didn't stay there long. Saw moc and three others back on the water drifting along the island channel, but I had enough for the day. Caught spot, sea robin, croaker, short flounder and a keeper flounder (17").

It was a fun and nice day, and it was good to see all the guys there. We should do it again.

Looks like you all had a good time...

Tufnik, are you thinking about heading down again the weekend after this? Also I might still be interested in the GC rod if it's available.

Great finally meeting everyone and putting some faces with the names. Two things, I think I will have to invest in a VHF. I have a waterproof cell for safety, but it would have been great to hear where everyone was and how they were doing through out the day. Secondly, I don't think I will be back to OC on a summer weekend anytime soon. Just way to many crazy and irresponsible boaters for me. However, where else can you have a pontoon boat with about ten ladies in bikinis pull up to you and give you a beer...hmm anyone want to join me tomorrow

I had a great time as well and enjoyed meeting everyone for the first time! I hope to attend more of the meet & greets on the eastern shore in the future.

I opted to stay in the inlet during the morning session. Mostly jigged a bucktail/teaser combo with gulp and belly strips resulting in one short flounder and one just barely, by the skin of it's tail, keeper. But I couldn't taste the difference between it and a doormat flounder after I fried it up! . Since the bite was slow jigging, I caught some spot at the west end of the inlet and took them out to the east end to live line. I got one short bass, maybe 20" or so, right away but nothing after. Going back out after lunch proved to be more of a workout as the current was running out pretty good and the water seemed much dirtier than the morning. I ended up getting one more short flounder jigging on the Assateague side of the channel before calling it a day. But again, a great overall time for my first meet & greet!

A couple pics I took: Chexone's first keeper in the morning, moc giving a ray holy heck, my flounder and short bass, and a few others miscellaneous ones.

@moc: same species as before but some of the croakers were a lot bigger. Had to cut my line once near the bridge when a big ray intercepted my bait.....o, I caught more crabs this time.

I had a blast got a few fish no keepers and the spider crab was mine got him on a 6" gulp grub [what a fight]. I went past the inlet out in the ocean just because it was there. DSCN0086.jpg DSCN0087.jpg DSCN0088.jpg DSCN0092.jpg I think you can say that was [BIG WATER] can't wait to get back to the ocean.

Yea, that morning was definitely the day to go, it was the calmest I have ever seen.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread...spent the first half of this week in VA beach camping with my family.

I think everyone else reported everything there is to report...I started out jigging bucktails with gulp, but lost all of my heavy jigs to snags. The lighter jigs didn't work because the current was so strong, so I switched to live minnows on tog rigs I had from last fall . I ended up catching 2 keeper flounders on the live minnows. Here are some pics from the day.

It felt like one of the best meet and greets that I have ever attended. We have had some good ones in the past but for me I accomplished two things... First being able to overcome the fear of the inlet with its waves and currents. The second is that I caught my FIRST KEEPER Flounder in OC on a Yak!!!! Yes Moc, You said it right when you said that I was the Happiest one there. Also, Thanks to the guy that showed me how to fillet a Flounder, I forgot your name or handle here on the forum but Thank You. I am grateful to those of you who helped me to overcome one of my biggest fears in this sport that we all love. Thanks to Russ and Daddy G for allowing me to have a chair to sleep in at Russ' condo. Damn that was one hell of a comfy chair!!!! I slept better on that recliner than my own bed...Also to Russ for sticking with me for bit until I was at ease with the water conditions. I bet you didn't even know you were doing that... Thanks. I can't wait to do it again next year. I've fished the inlet in the past but always stayed near or north of the 50 bridge. Now that I am no longer working as an EMT I will have more time to get out more.
