  • Severn River weekend

Saturday didn't look too promising in the morning, but I got up early and drove to Weems Creek anyway. My intentions were to go out to the red/green WC buoy to do some bottom fishing. As is now my routine, I tossed a buck tail jig and trolled on the way there. Just about at the mouth of the creek, I caught a 13" striper. Bottom fishing proved to be interesting. Initially, i thought i got my line tangled around the Ram transducer arm. But when the line took a strong swing under my yak, i knew it wasnt tangled. It was really fun catching a 15" striper on a bottom rig on a very light rod. On the way back in, caught the usual amount of willing perch.

Sunday was great weather. Another early start. I went out to the r/g buoy and caught a number of croaker on a bottom rig. Caught two on one rig. That made for a nice photo. Decided to go out toward the Naval Academy. Caught a 15" striper near the bridge. On the way back in, I was trolling as usual. Buck tail jig with a green curly tail eel (found the eels the other day at Bass Pro). Right before the mouth of Weems Creek, in fairly shallow water, the heavier rod I use for trolling went berserk. O.K., I'm thinking I've just gotten hooked up on something and I'm going to lose my buck tail jig. As I am reeling it in and it is moving in to me, with a good amount of resistance, I realize there's something good on there. A 17 3/4" striper! A beauty.

After the striper, I decided not to even cast for perch. This was a great way to end the day.

Sounds like you had a great day, and you are getting it figured out.
We started Sunday with the charter boat live lining the Bridge. We did O.K., put a few fish in the boat to keep the customers happy, but, except for the tide, it was slow. At least it wasn't as hot as it was on Friday (we did better, the current wasn't as strong and the fish seemed more active). But it was a bear to be out there. 4 Gator-Aids and two bottles of water and I was still dehydrated by the end of the trip.
One guy in a yellow Hobie was sharing the pilings with us, at least until the current started ripping. I guess you can only pedal so fast..
We finished the trip with some bottom fishing with fish bites near Hackett's, and the bottom was filled with Spot, Croaker, Perch and baby rock (pebbles?). Many multi species double headers.

If someone told me I had too much fun, I might just agree. I used to think charters were fun. I am liking the kayak a lot more. No sea sickness like on the larger boats.

I enjoy the continued rolling of the waves when I get home, especially at bed time.

Way to go Laura. You have been reporting larger fish on each outing. That is a good trend to have. Keep up the good work.

As you continue to gain more confidence, try trolling 2 or 3 rods rather than just one. Every now and then you will get multiple hookups at the same time. That is a lot of fun too.

No, not crazy. Doesn't bother me in the least. I don't really feel the heat as long as I have my cooler filled with water and Gatorade. Also, I wear a long sleeve ExOfficio cooling shirt. So, I am very comfortable.

That's a fun area to fish.

A special congrats on the nice stripers.

                    Laura -

I trolled around the outer part of Weems for a while this morning. I caught 16" and 18" stripers on a chartreuse Gulp 4" swimming mullet. I caught plenty of perch trolling and casting small spinners, but had no bites when bottom fishing near the red/green marker. You are working the right spots. Often it is just good fortune that the fish are there at the very moment your lure rides by.
