Raptor and I fished the outgoing tide this morning at Jonas Green.
It was a busy day on the Severn for a weekday. The professional crabbers were present as usual but there was also a sailing regatta in front of the Academy and perhaps 100 or more Middies on the water in a rubber raft race. “Stroke, stroke stroke!” I’ll hear that in my sleep tonight. Add to the above a pervasive west to northwest wind that made the surf a bit choppy. It was important to keep your head up and aware of your surroundings or you might unexpectedly meet a waterman, a sailboat or a future Navy officer.
With all the activity mentioned above trolling or casting in open water was a bit dicey. Raptor and I tried both methods to no avail. However, the good thing about Jonas Green is that white perch always seem to be waiting and willing along the shoreline. Today was no exception. We tossed 1/8 oz. jig spinners dressed with curly tailed grubs and ΒΌ oz. Rat L Traps to the rip rap and near the many pilings. Raptor stopped counting after his 20th white perch. I caught 13 or so white perch and one striper holding among the perch literally only a few feet from shore. The striper hit a chartreuse 4 inch Mister Twister on a jig spinner with a barbless hook. It was clear from the moment of the strike on my light tackle that this was no perch.

Despite the unrelenting wind and higher than normal water traffic, Jonas Green did not disappoint. It remains an excellent place to fish from a kayak.
