Got the Duck, NC Blues

My son and I fished in the ocean today from kayaks at Duck, NC. We were out for about 1.5 hours. My son was throwing a silver Gotcha lure. I was using a bottom rig with squid strips. Not much going on at first. I eventually spotted some surface activity nearby. I soon hooked into my first ever blue fish. About 10 minutes later my son hooked into his first ever blue on his Gotcha. Then we tried to follow the breaking fish. Soon my son hooked into a big fish that was about 3 feet long and slender. Looked like a barracuda or maybe a mackerel of some kind. It came off after a few seconds, but gave him a thrill.

u most likely had a ladyfish or a ribbonfish.

We rented the kayaks along with some bikes. Hopefully we will go after redfish in the sound side tomorrow.

HOLY MACKEREL BATMAN! That hound fish sounds interesting too. Must have a good nose, guess they use him to round up the usual underwater suspects.

Here is a houndfish I caught in the mid-90s near Hatteras Inlet. It was about 4 ft long but did not weigh much. It swam 270 deg around the boat and leaped several times.

We are right next to the pier but have not gotten very close to it yet. We are about to load up the kayaks and head to the ocean.

Awesome, good luck! I know a few years ago we were catching triggerfish there on top and bottom rigs with squid but that was from shore. I don't know if there are any restrictions about getting close to the pier with watercraft.

Sounds like fun!! I'm looking forward to more reports. I'm headed to Corolla this weekend and will be there next week. I'm going to try and take my yak and do some fishing while I am there.

Paddled for 2 hours and now eating lunch. Made it against the wind and waves to fish the Duck Army pier. A guy was spear fishing for triggers and left the end when a 4 or 5 foot shark was interested in him. I caught 6 blues about half way down the pier using a silver spoon.

Went back to the pier and caught 3 more blues on the spoon. Too much wind, current, and waves to hold position. Would make a cast and end up 20 yards away from the pier when done reeling in. Got a good workout. First ever fish using a spoon.
