My daughter with a NICE redfish from the sound. Caught on a Redfish Magic spinner.

Typical bluefish from the Duck pier.

Took the kayak to the Duck pier again. I caught 3 speckled sea trout all on a chartreuse gulp swimming mullet and 3/8 ounce jig. All in all it was a good fishing week. 11 bluefish. 3 specks. 1 redfish. 1 spot. 2 new fish species for me.

Nice going Tom! New fish caught from the kayak ranks right up there with personal bests.

Sounds like a good week. So, I'm a rookie at thus saltwater fishing, what type of line and hooks were you using? I read what baits which helps a lot and I will try some.

We used regular 10 pound braid that we use for smallie fishing. We also used reels with 20 pound mono. I had a steel leader with a swivel on one end and a clip on the other. You would probably be fine without the steel leader. I mostly used it because of the swivel and the spoon I was fishing with to prevent line twist.

How far out under the pier were you for the specks? I got here yesterday and fished around it with no luck on a spoon and saw a guy fishing with shrimp on a kayak and all he was catching was croaker, I plan to try again today. Thanks!

I was about half way down the Duck Pier on the North side. You will see that there are some pipes that go down into the water at different parts of the pier and I was mostly fishing around the last pipe, half way down. I caught all the specks when casting under the pier, between the support legs. I only caught blues on a silver spoon and caught the specks on a chartreuse gulp mullet and 3/8 ounce jig.

So how much waves and wind are going on? When the wind blows from the ocean, to the shore the water is warmer and I believe the fishing is better.

Thanks for the tips, I really appreciate it! I just read this after getting in from fishing all day but the wind shifted back around today so it's blowing from the ocean in towards shore and the waves were getting bigger. The fishin did pick up from yesterday . I caught a bunch of croaker and checked off three new species from the kayak. I caught a small Black Sea bass, some pinfish I think, and a few nice triggerfish that we're about to pan fry. Some guys pulled up on a boat and anchored and dove and spearfished for triggers and also shot some small spades and a sheepshead. They were nice enough to feed me lunch when they grilled up some sausages on their boat after fishing. Overall a pretty good day. Headed to the sound in the morning .image.jpg
