Plo 8/3 & 8/10

I launched early in the morn from the store/rental area into the cove...stayed sheltered from the wind on 8/3 as much as I could, then just ventured out in it and fished the inlet and outer beach, and around the historic buildings on the point. 8/10 much less wind, I fished the same areas...both Saturdays I caught lots of baby blues and just shy of legal rockfish, croakers, and some white perch. Twice each Saturday my line snapped when something bigger tried to take off with it. At the point I was fishing and got surrounded by boats...everybody was cool and friendly and catching fish then my rod bent in half. Of course, it was the ultra-lite and soon I pulled the 17.5" rockfish back to my kayak, but, only after it swam under the kayak, to the left and the right. It was fun, indeed! There was also this 1 center-console boat that would race towards me from afar it seems like everytime I catch a bunch of fish in one spot....was he using binoculars? He would then set up nearly spitting- distance from me, not catch anything, then he would rocket back across to the deeper water on the other side, sending tsunami-sized waves for me to surf. He would never wave, say hello, or acknowledge me. This happened 3 times! Yesterday, I even caught my 1st gar...actually, I caught several of them. They were babies about a foot long....and, yes, bluefish do vomit the minnows on you that they were eating before they ate my bait and were hooked. I did catch 1 big w perch that only measured 12" but it was fat so I kept that. I ate that and 1 small 8.5" blue for dinner last night. Good times!

Thanks for the report. Congrats to your 1st gar. Next time save the bluefish vomit so you can throw it at the rude boaters

Those PLO boaters must use binoculars Whenican, I've been pushed from many a fishin' holes by boats that have seen my rod bend over. Thanks for your report!

FYI the gar looking fish you caught was likely an Atlantic needle fish. They are very common around PLO this time of year and are highly aggressive.

@Meadeo: yes, looks more like a needlefish(thx).........when reeling one in, sometimes 1 or 2 others would follow it in.
@Scorpiioreno: I fished all sides of the point where the fenced-in historic buildings are located, bayside and riverside. I also fished the inlet(inside & outside), the outer beach, along the rocks too.

Most boaters are decent folks and understand fishing rules of the road, but every now and then you get one that doesn't follow any rules- those are the dangerous ones- they ignore no wake zones, will push you out of your fishing spot because their boat is bigger than yours- and act arrogant, bullish, and generally lack class- thankfully, they are a small minority- PLO is one of my favorite fishing spots- hard to fish and a big area- it is a real challenge- fish are rarely ever in the same spot- there are a few exceptions, but Cornfield Harbor covers a huge area- finding them a few times gives you clues where to look the next time- big stripers hang out here in the fall- but move around a lot- especially following schools of baitfish with tide changes- generally you fish the edges of the shipping channels and around the deep drop offs, but even that is hit or miss- sometimes large schools of fish move into the shallows and you are surprised to find them in 15-20 feet of water- mostly because the baitfish are there-
