  • Spanish Mac and Puppy at St Jerome Creek - Aug 31, 2013

Six of us, VA kayakers went to St Jerome Creek
Three went out chased birds about a mile away and three stayed in the creek. We caught many 10" bluefish and few small flounder in the creek. No spceks no stripers.

Three came back tired hours after chasing the birds. They caught many large bluefish and a Spanish Mackerel.
During a long late lunch break, one caught a puppy while surf fishing

Congrats on nice drum and mac! Looks like we have another guy on the leaderboard.

I really like smoked bluefish but I caught maybe one or two small ones this year. Are the big ones running at SJC?

Thanks for the vid report, Joe.

            Kevin,
It was a $12 Yo-zuri Cristal Minnow (3.5") for specks. Meado (on Ride 135) chased the birds for hours and caught the Spanish. He was tired
I brought gold and silver Clark spoons size 00 - 0 and 1oz inline sinkers for Spanish. I also brought a Sea Striker #3 planner to troll a spoon. As a former boater, I think Clark Spoon, size 00, the smallest is the best for Mid-Chesapeake Bay. Except me, none prepared lures for Spanish.
I stayed with friends who hadn't fished open water yet. The water was a little rough a mile out. One got turtled. The damage was $400

Next time we all gonna chase the birds because everyone is physically ready and kayaks are adequate for the choppy water

I told Meado repeatedly while driving back home that I had been trying 5-6 years. I even had used a home made sail to chase the leaping Spanish Mac.

                    Gloves off.
I will be chasing Spanish until Mid September

I will prepare lime, chili peppers and onions before I go fishing. Spanish Mackerel Ceviche will be my dinner

Did the turtle happen in the mouth of the creek or out chasing breakers?

The turtle was out in the middle of the bay between the mouth of St Jerome s and Point no point light house. I was not near the other boat when it turtle d, regardless it happened in a bad place he was able to right the boat and get back in and paddle to shore to regroup fortunately.

The waves were 3-5 foot rollers out in the bay with chop 1-2 foot on top was pretty dicey but the blues and macks were all over for about two hours so worth the swamp ass.
