  • SPSP 09/04/13 - First Striped Bass on a Kayak!

What a beautiful day! This was my first time live lining with spot for rockfish.

Got out of school at around 1 PM and was on the water by 4 PM.
Bought some nice spots at anglers on the way.
I asked for a dozen spots and they gave me a whole lot more than a dozen (how kind of them).

Started fishing straight on the pylons. I caught my first rock of the day (and first on a kayak) and caught a nice undersized one at 16.5 inches. This was 1 hour before the highest tide. It was very productive (I feel at this time) because the waves weren't as powerful after 1 or 2 hours (highest tide). I just couldn't understand how or when to yank my rod to set the hook.

For the next two hours, I caught 1 more 17 incher near the same pylons. I started to head out for deeper waters. I couldn't catch a thing out there because it was so hard to get close to the pylons. In deeper waters at 30 feet of water, I got a snag and had to cut the line. It started to get dark at around 7:30 - 8:00 PM.

I decided to head back to shallower water (15-18 ft of water). After about 4 hours of fishing and actually figuring out when/how to set the hook, I was catching fish like no tomorrow. Within 30 minutes, I caught an 18 incher and a 24 incher. I lost another 23-25 incher right by the boat because the hook was right on the tip of its mouth. Although I was having fun like a kid again, I had to head home because it was getting way too dark.

Filet'ed the fish by 10 PM and went to bed I am planning on going again tomorrow (Friday - 9/06/13), being on the water by 3 PM.

What set up/rigs were you using to live line or troll? I have yet to catch a striper but then again ive only been out twice. I will try my luck at the bridge very soon.

                            Thai monkee,

I just used a standard Carolina rig without any beads. 18 inch leader. Everything I used was monofilament line. 20 lb clear mono was invisible to them i think braid will work better though if you have that. I did not troll for rocks so I can't help with that. I also used a 1 oz egg weight right before the leader.

You might run into Abumasgouf, Toyomo and Sparky1423 if they're still out there. I was out there with them and Shady and DaddyG this morning. Rough seas! But I managed to catch 9 fish up to 23". Good luck!
