  • Is that a speck in the severn?

In between trying my luck at trotlining for crabs at Jonas Greene, I fished some of the shell bottom areas near my line. Caught the regular white perch and croaker, and then up comes this guy. Anyone else catch specks this far up in the bay ? I've caught them way further south, never up this far.

I caught one in Crab Alley last Tuesday. I've never caught one in the Severn.

Nice, I'm sure there are a few more in there too. We caught a few small ones like that are the bay bridge last year at the CBKA tournament.

There are reports of some being caught in the area. We used to have a nice run of sea trout in the South River, back in the mid 1990s. That sort of tapered off.

Nice catch. I have not heard of any being caught in the Severn yet this year until your report. But is sure looks like a spec to me.

I am new to running a trotline and unfortunately am not pedaling (paddling instead) so it's a little tricky to scoop between paddle strokes, but I'm on the uphill part of the learning curve. They just seemed to start running as I was pulling in my line. I only caught a few but the ones that I did catch seemed to be nice sized and heavy though. I'll post some pics of my setup soon, so those that paddle can see that it is in fact possible.

It surely looks like a speck. It's so small I can barely see it.

Thanks for the report, and kudos to you for giving it a go on a paddle yak. When I pull the line in by hand, I always catch crabs...so I am sure you will be able to make it work.

I don't have many talents but being a smart@ss is one of the few I have.

                      Good job!
