Last night I hit the water with Mytmouse and Foursteps24 in search of rockfish. Tide was toward the end of the outgoing phase when we launched at approximately 6pm. Clear skies, light winds, calm waters. It was a makings of nice evening. We began working our targeted structure. When exploring new areas, we typically converse & plan throughout the day using Google Earth and nautical charts.
Once we got to our target location, we began fishing. I was using a 1/4oz jighead w/ 4" Mirrolure Soft Shad (plum w/ chartreuse tail was the color). After working together to cover a concentrated area, I split from our trio and worked a different section about 1/2 mile away. After casting for about 5 minutes, fish on!! I landed a healthy 22" striper. I radio'd to myt & foursteps, "SAMMMMWWWIIICCCHHH". Myt's reply: "oh, you're just now getting one?" Bastard.
By this time, Redfish12 came out to join in on the action. Shortly after joining us, he picked up a low-mid 20" class striper.
I laid the fish under my leg and kept fishing. I saw a striper working the area, crashing bait on the surface occasionally. After a few more casts, another fish on. This one was my new personal best rockfish, measuring 25". I paddled back to the group and asked "Y'all didn't limit out yet?". Foursteps already had his second keeper. Mytmouse had an alleged upper 20" class fish in the boat that he lost due to improper handling. He hadn't put it on the hawg trough, so we don't have exact numbers. *note*
After a short while, the tide died and so did the bite. Redfish knew of a spot that has produced for him, so we ventured there, trolling on the way. On the troll, redfish picked up another keeper rockfish which was released. Foursteps also picked up another striper on the troll.
We paddled (foursteps & I left the motors at home for this trip) 3.5 miles to redfish's hot spot. He told us we had to just paddle to the reef ball, but then he realized we couldn't/wouldn't be able to see the reef ball because it was dark outside. So he point out a green flashing light, and kinda led us that way for a little bit. We didnt catch anything at Redfish's spot. *note*
We paddled our way back north for the 3.5 miles laughing, joking, and trolling. We came upon a big school of dink stripers. Foursteps landed one, measuring in the mid-teen range.
It was a fun night out there...we could not have asked for better conditions. We traveled over 7 miles when all was said and done.
This was my first time using my Lexa rod/Lexa 100 reel combo. Pretty sweet setup. I have to get used to casting with such a high speed reel...I had a few birds nests throughout the evening. It is much more free-spinning than my old Revo SX. Casting it at night adds a different element as well. The fish I caught on it felt great though.
