I launched from Tucker St this morning about 8:30. After reading all the advice in this thread I decided to bring two spinning rods. One rigged with 1/8 oz jighead with 2 1/2" Gulp minnow and one with a Mepps spinner. Remembering I had a baitcaster rigged with a spinnerbait I always carry around this time of year for pond fishing, I decided to bring that too. I'm glad I did! Before today the only two fish I've caught from my kayak were a perch and a croaker with a combined length of maybe 14".
I decided to target fallen trees along the shoreline. After an hour or so with no luck with the jig or Mepps I decided to give the double bladed 3/8oz Strike King spinnerbait a try. 15 minutes of pitching around submerged timber and BAM! a 23" pickerel slammed it and decided to put on an acrobatic show. Sorry no picture, it was all I could do to get a measurement while it was flopping around in my lap with a mouth full of teeth. I fished til around 10:30 then I had to head home for an appt. It was good to finally get some slime on the yak. I can't wait to go back. As long as I can throw something 3/8oz or heavier I think I'll stick with my baitcaster as it was easier to be more accurate with my casts.BRETT
