  • North East River/Creek 3/15/14

Yakkinfish18 (Rob) and I planned earlier in the week to give one more try for yellow perch. I heard reports they moved to shallow water to get their groove on. We decided on the North East River. Launched at the kayak/canoe launch inside North East Community Park, this would be our first time on this river. We made a right and headed into the NE creek to find some shallow water.

Right away we were catching perch once the tide started moving in. Rob and I were using the typical tandem grub bottom rig....water temp was 44 degrees. 8-10 FOW was the most productive depth, clouds of fish on the FF told us when to drop our rigs. We limited out with ease, plenty of dinks were mixed in the crowd. I also hooked into a 19" LMB with the same rig. It was a big surprise, after we both were occasionally snagging gizzard shad.

After limiting, we had some fun snagging gizzard shad. They were THICK, I was just using a bottom rig and sinker with no bait. Not sure if it was proper fish ethics, but it sure was fun! Great fishing with you Rob.

Very nice! I wonder if they'll still be around next weekend were you using minnows?

I brought minnows, but the grubs were catching consistently. I used a few minnows but it seemed they were catching smaller perch. Just filleted the perch...the females still have eggs, and the males are now full of milt. Not much time left in the season.

It was a good day fishing with you Jeremy, great company and catching fish with non-stop action. It's always nice to limit out on some tasty fish! I'm getting ready to fillet my fish and chow down. Looking forward to the next time out on the yaks

Fish like a man....you don't need no stinkin' minnows!
Perch look great. I'm surprised they're still around. I bet they are getting anxious to get out of dodge before the stripers show up. Did you happen to see any boats off lapidum or on the flats?

I did not see anything around Lapidum or the flats when I crossed the Hatem Bridge. Conowingo has had numerous spill gates open throughout the week because of the northern run off. The river is high and brown.

Glad you guys smoked em'. Either of you two plan on trying to get on em' one more time, and how likely is it that they'd still be hold up in the creek by Friday/Saturday?

Hey Dan, that was my last perch mission for the year. Some members are expressing interest on going later this week....I am sure something will pop up on the forum. Some reports are claiming that some perch have spawned, I have not seen any evidence on the banks. I know it's only a matter of days before the perch will scatter for the year. Not sure if water temps or the internal clock causing the majority to spawn, but it will be soon. With the amount of reproductive fluids I was covered in, I am sure it has started, lol.
