Beautiful morning and a real pleasure meeting everyone. No love for me either as far as fish. Total skunk. I also stayed between the bridges. The action seemed to be slow for everyone I talked to there. I'm sure I marked one nice fish rising to a sinking rattle trap that I was jigging in about 20' while watching it on the FF, about halfway between the two bridge. Seems all the hot action was down toward the mouth of the river today.
Still overall one of the finest Monday mornings I have ever had and once again a real pleasure meeting everyone.

Thank you, gentlemen, for a fine day of fishing. Finally caught my first striper ever thanks to the teachings of John Veil. I used a half oz yellow jig head with a white plastic fish that had a green tail to catch my fish. Harry - when you said you thought you were caught on something I was hoping it was my pole that I lost. Never spent that much money on a rod and reel. It still had not even caught a fish, and over it went. I watched as it ever-so-slowly disappeared into the Severn...oh ya...with
my sun glasses. It was an expensive ;o but rewarding day. I still consider myself lucky because I have all ten fingers. I ran into John's trolling line and while taking the line off my yak his hook embedded in my thumb, and he was still moving! I'm looking forward to future fishing days with my new Snaggedline friends.

Hearing all the rod overboard stories is the exact reason why my new rod setups stay leashed at all times!. It can be a real pain when trying to swap rod positions when fighting a fish but that is a mild hickup in comparison to losing my $200 a piece setups. I highly recommend leashing all your rods!

I was out there yesterday as well. (one of the two orange Tarpon 120's out there) I'm rarely off on a monday, and despite getting skunked, it was a beatiful day on the Severn indeed. I can definitely get used to calm waters and not a single motor boat racing by. The biggest wakes of the morning were caused by the Navy rowing team!! LOL.

I live on the shores of the upper Severn (right at the river's narrowest point) and paddle/fish 3-4 days a week (for a few hrs in the evening after work and at least once on the weekend) It's nice down by the bridges....and your chances of catching stripers larger than 18" increase tenfold, but the ease of launching from home is just too good to pass up. Either way, if I get another weekeday off, you'll see my down there again for sure. Hopefully by then all this moss from the oak trees will have rotted and sunk to the bottom. I must have pulled in 10 lbs of the stuff yesterday...both casting and trolling. It was everywhere...especially hovering in the topwater. Sadly, it was the only thing I reeled in all morning.

This maybe a stupid question to ask on here since everyone is so good at it but.. How do you guys fish the severn for stripers? I been out twice now trying for stripers, yakked close to 12miles total with no fish to show for it. This happened last year for me and i quit saltwater fishing just as quick as i decided to try it. Attempting to fish saltwater again this year and the outlook is not looking good.. And im using 4.5" saltwater assassins on 1/2oz heads and buck tails.. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Jaspratt, my advice for you would be to meetup with some people and go out with them. I have had a few skunk days but for the most part the severn has been very good to me. When I troll I normally use 3/4oz jig heads(or bucktails) with a 4-5" paddle tail. I put a white setup on one rod and a chartreuse or electric chicken color on the other rod. I keep my speed between 2.5 - 3 knots and troll in depths of 5 - 20 ft of water. I have had luck catching them where there are quick drop offs. I usually am free in the morning on weekdays if you want to go out sometime.

How far are u trolling that behind you? Average cast distance?

Assists21 I used to cast out to the sides maybe 50ft or so(not to good at estimating distance). I started using levelwind baitcasters this year which is much better in my opinion because I can count the levelwind as it moves from one side to another as I let the lure out and then write down that # and the depth if I catch fish, then use that as a reference for next time. Other people troll rapala xraps and seem to catch stripers on them fairly often, plus you know the estimated depth in which they are diving based on which model you get. It all comes with time and trial and error. J.A. Veil was a huge help when I first started trolling last year. I will let you guys know the next time I am heading out if you want to join and hopefully I can put you onto some fish!

Tomorrow as in thursday? Are you launching from jonas green? I might have to meet you down there. Im open to fish the mornings till noon on weekdays. The distance behind me i usually troll, i cast far back as i can then as i paddle i free spool another 25' or so. When i run in 10' my 1/2oz? Bumps bottom. Mothers day i went out trolling 15' or less along the drop. Using 3/8oz lead head with a 4.5" paddle tail in chartreuse. I dont have any rod holders setup for trolling. So im usually just dragging 1 bait behind me because i have to hold the rod.
