My dad and I went to St. Inigoes on May 26th.
There was a good amount of people there for the long holiday weekend. It was a beautiful day. 80+ degrees light winds.
We were in search of stripers but we couldn't find any so we settled on catching croakers. We were using shrimp and caught a good amount but they were all small.
We went back down to St. Mary's county on May 31st to try again for stripers this time at PLO.
However, when we got there the wind was strong so we decided to try St. Jerome Creek. After we launched, we tried trolling along the 3 red markers along the way to the inlet but we didn't have any luck. Once we got to the inlet we immediately started picking up croakers and a sea mullet. We had heard that specks had been caught in the area so we started to target them. I placed my second rod in my rear rod holder and let the 4" chartreuse swimming mullet gulp sit a couple feet below the surface so it wouldn't dry out while I fished a Bass Assassin Sea Shad (Chicken On A Chain color) along the shoreline. I was casting and retrieving for about twenty minutes before I started feeling something hitting my lure. However, just as I thought I was going to hookup I heard a very loud crash behind me. I looked back and it was the rod in the rod holder which had broken at the base and was now in the water barely hanging on by a rod leash.
At first it didn't register that there was a fish involved, my first thought was that I had snagged during the drift and it had broken the rod. I pulled the leash in and was able to get the rod in my hands and I started cranking and my line started peeling out and I knew I had a fish. The question was what fish. As I got it close to the boat I could see the copper color of a red drum (my favorite fish to catch). The whole time I was saying please just let me get him in the boat which I finally did. However, just as I started to take a picture my rod with the Bass Assassin started peeling out which ended up being a slightly longer red but not as fat. They both beat my personal best of 23". It was a great day fishing with my dad.
