  • Key bridge area question from a new kayak fisher

    Hi everyone.
I'm a long time fisherman and I have been an active kayaker for about 6 years. Now I want to put the two together. Two weeks ago I kayaked the Key bridge and started think that it might be a decent place for fishing.

For the last two weeks I have been trying to learn everything I can about Striped Bass fishing via the internet. I am close to saturation!
Anyhow, Fort Armistad is close for me and I would like to know everyones opinions and experiences in that area. I'll be trying that location (jigging and trolling). I think jigging the piers and then trolling the deeper channel areas. I also see that there are some structures to the east of the Ft Carrol island.

Just FYI- I am on a 13.5 Necky Vector and I am available for Heroes on the Water. As a dual-service combat vet I can appreciate the impact H.O.W can have.

    Looking forward to your replies.

I fish the Patapsco quite a bit. I fished for stripers each of the last two weekends, but only small fish seem to be there right now. Fish the patapsco through different seasons. You can also try canton waterfront and harbor hospital for other launch sites. I think that jigging the key bridge pilings may be similar to fishing the bay bridge during the summer. I usually shift my attention to other species during the summer so I can't say for sure. The blue fish will come in over the next few months so soft plastics will get chewed to pieces!

Hey, I was talking with a kayaker I met when fishing the Susquehanna a couple days ago. I believe his name was Phil (Yakbass__?) He was telling me that he launches from Ft. Armistad and paddles to the 2nd or 3rd piling. Apparently the pilings are in pairs of 2, but the 2nd or 3rd one is a single flat sided piling. He said that he uses a simple tandem bottom rig and uses grass shrimp or small jigs for perch and he has caught some stripers there too. I was hoping to try it out maybe this weekend if nothing comes up. If you check it out, let us know whats up

Was around that spot two weeks ago and we saw clouds of fish on the FF. I think they were probably small catfish. They could have been perch. Either way, some grass shrimp will solve the mystery! Go get 'em!

Perch can be all through that area and along the shoreline rip rap. I've never caught a legal striper along the bridge but I have further up in the harbor hospital area so I'm sure they are there from time to time.

I have fished that area in the past...i have had very good luck perch fishing the AA county side of the bridge...ultra lite rod and perch lotta fun. the rock i've hooked up on jigging spoons tipped with clam snout. some have been up to 24" i have not trolled much in my yak...so can't speak on that would like to try trolling.... not sure on the set up weight wise 1oz 2oz ??? ect. the area does hold fish perch, rock, snapper blues, cats, spot, and the grand prize ROCKFISH. hope to be out in that area on Sunday depending on weather. i'll be in a sand colored yak. hope to seen ya out there. the fish has seemed a bit slow this yr in the upper bay from what i read and from my experience the few times i've been out but that area has produced well in warmer temps...so we'll see!! TIGHT LINES & BENT RODS ALWAYS MY FRIENDS!!! dkwon pleasure to meet and speak with ya on Sunday!!
