Got out on the Chesapeake Bay on this past Saturday with Jeff Little to chase some striped bass. He has been putting some time and effort into pursuing striped bass on the Chesapeake Bay developing techniques and patterns that will work for the kayak angler. He provided an extra Tarpon 160 for me to fish out of. The T-160 has speed to spare and handled the windy conditions and rollers we encountered like a champ. That kayak has the best forward "glide" of any kayak I have paddled which really helps eat up the big distances encountered out on the Chesapeake.
I do not fish for striped bass very frequently (much more of largemouth guy). Jeff was able to put me on a very "black bass" like pattern on Saturday where I could use the same rods and reels I use for largemouth. We were working rip-rap and rock piles with salt water sized Rapala X-Raps. I now have a new PB for striped bass as a 29.25" striper chased down my X-Rap then gave my new Curado 200 the drag "smoke" test.
Jeff films these patterns for his Tight Line Junkie's Journal Pivotshare video channel. He has groups of videos categorized by species (smallmouth, largemouth, stripers, etc.) where the various patterns are presented with some on the water time (and then detailed explanation of what is going on and what to look for).
