Yeah like he said, the absolute key is a sharp knife. The sharper the better.

Nice catch! Love the release technique. I've been catching a lot of perch and some small stripers on the Severn between the 450 bridge and the 50 bridge. Every time i throw a few shads and bucktails around the 450 bridge but I've not caught anything near a legal rock. Any success around there? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?

This morning I found plenty of perch in the shoreline areas of Weems Creek and another upstream tributary. They hit a Bignose spinner and a 2" grub on a 1/8-oz jighead. I trolled while moving between areas and had no hits using that method. At the end of the trip I drifted from the Rt 50 bridge downstream to the mouth of Weems fishing Fishbites on a bottom rig. There is a large oyster bottom the entire way there. I caught a croaker almost immediately, then the bite stopped. It was my first croaker of the year. I had almost forgotten how hard they pull.

I haven't gotten any croaker yet.

I am amazed how hard spot pull though, like the bluegill of the salt.

I looked up what Fishbites are and see that there are many colors and flavors, like shrimp, crab, clam, fish-n-chunks, bag-o-worms, etc. Is there a flavor preference for catching particular fish? Can I use the same flavor for all fish?
                Thanks.

I use "Bag-O-Worms" bloodworm. There are also two kinds, fast acting and longer lasting. Some of our members have said the fast acting are for cold water and long lasting for warmer water. I have both, but I've been using the longer lasting with mesh inside; they still dissolve fairly quick...a piece might last an hour or so.

Edit add: Also, I use them only for bottom fishing, intended target is croaker and spot. I've caught spot, but haven't found croaker yet.

Minnow trap update: Got it and set with a piece of bread off a pier in about 5' of water at 10:30 Sunday nite. Checked it at 5:45 the next morning and there was just one small eel about 5-6 inches long in it. I think he skert all the minnows away!

I ended up with a good morning casting a rattletrap and a Gulped quarter

                    least double the smallies.

Will try the minnow trap again. Can't beat fresh live natural bait when bottom fishing for perch.

It is amazing how many baits, lures, and techniques people have to catch 'em. Seems like if they're there, they'll take anything.

White Perch are very aggressive, I've caught them on just about everything. Crank baits, inline spinners, and worm harness spinners have been the best. They must like flashy/wiggly stuff.

The funny thing is, everyone swears by their own bait, their own lure; cast,
                        trolled, bottom fished, whatever.

Maybe each of us should get out of our comfort zones, at least for one day and try something different, if only for the challenge.

                          I don't have a comfort zone, I try everything.

I think kayakers in general are resourceful type folks who will try different ways to fish. I learned a lot of new techniques on this forum over the last couple of years.

Try Stove top stuffing in your minnow trap, place some in a baggie and put some slits in the bag.

Whacked a bunch of croakers and spot Sunday morning tried some peeler but bws was what they wanted.

Minnow trap- I use a liitle bit of shirmp or even fish bites for best rests. Squid works great but if you have eels aroUnd and I am leaving it out for awhile the eels always seem to get in and eat all my bait
