  • First for me

I was at the June M & G on the Upper Potomac. I am one that likes to fish a spot through a couple of casts and if i don't get a strike I move on, I probably miss a lot of good fish that way but there is a lot of river to cover. So I was basically fishing by myself and the only other person that was moving at my pace was Don K., and I would see him occasionally throughout the float. I got near the power line crossing and I had been thinking about this cigar that I had brought with me and I was debating if I should light it up or not. Well I finally got in my bag and got my cigar out and I grabbed my lighter and wouldn't you know my lighter would not work it would only spark. There was a slight breeze that day so I would spin my yak around so my back would face down stream so I could get the cigar lit and only spark and occasional flame was not cutting it. I then found a little box of matches that came with the cigar that the guy put in my bag. I then went to strike the first one and took up the position of lighting a my cigar and the match go tsss and out it goes. I spin my yak back around and navigate around a rock and repeat the process numerous times and on about my 13th match I finally got it lit and i am in business now smokin my cigar fishin, smoke blowin back in my face, maybe this was not a good idea for me. I am then approaching these large rocks and there is a guy on the left of the river on one side of these three or four rock and I am on the right of the river and I give the wave to him and he waves back. Now I don't want to get in this guys spot so I stay to the right and cast out towards the rocks and I get a hit on the retrieve and I hook it and I could tell it was a smaller fish but I was happy. Then while Im reeling it in out of the corner of my eye I catch a glimpse of something dark moving fast towards my fish that I am getting ready to pull out of the water and all at the same time it hits my fish, I about crap myself, I don't know what it happening, I start yelling who knows what, my cigar tumbles out of my mouth down in my lap some wear there is a violent commotion in the water, I am heading for a big rock the guy in the john must be just looking at me like what is wrong with that guy. I grab my paddle navigate the rock with rod still in my hand and now I have a larger fish on my line who just stole my lure from the smaller fish and I get it reeled in and up in the yak. It is approximately 16 1/2 to 17" red eye bass. Now it is flopping all over because I missed my grab, I'm amped up and I finally get a hold of it. take my pic get my lure free, release the fish and my lure falls down and gets stuck on my fishing bag. I forgot my knife of all things and the I am trying to muscle it off with my pliers and wire cutter and then it gets stuck in my pants. I wanted to fish the back side of that spot but now it is to far away and not worth the paddle back up. I get the lure out of my bag and my pants and there is my cigar rolling around and I grab it and of course it is out now. I have 4 matches left and I repeat the above listed process of lighting my cigar and none of the matches lit it so I put it back in my bag and continued on. What a great day.
