  • Plenty of fish in the Patapsco

Fished the Patapsco from 9 AM until about noon. Water temp 79 F, Turbidity 3.4. I don't typically fish for stripers during the summer but today was such a nice day, I headed to the Patapsco to see what was around. I wanted to identify the fish that were present so I trolled a 3 rod spread. 1 rod for larger rock down deep, 1 for smaller rock typical of this time of year and a third as a search bait that most fish would hit.

Immediately after launching, baitfish were swarming. Many small 2" fish and some larger 3-4" fish would leap from the water as I got closer...also as they were thrashed by bluefish, which were plentiful, albeit small. Plenty of small bluefish, rockfish and nice perch were around. The parking lot was packed on this beautiful day. The rockfish were holding to structure, easily found along the deep water docks on the down current side. Bluefish were along channel edges or pretty much wherever baitfish were located...which was everywhere. One bluefish was regurgitating baitfish which was the same profile as my 9-11' diving small Rapala, which was the only lure I caught bluefish on. One over zealous perch took a lure that was as big as it was.

Great day of fishing, even if the fish weren't giants. I wouldn't expect to many big ones in the Patapsco this time of year. September - November gets much better with larger fish in the mix.
