I've been using the Z-mans lately (thanks for turning me on to them) and the blues can still bite them off, just takes a little more time. What I noticed is the blues will continue to chew on the lure longer since it holds up so well. And yes, they still bite just behind the hook. Hence the recommendation on spoons with rear hooks to increase your hook up ratio with the blues. Haven't had any bite offs yet and I typically use 20 lb mono leaders and check for nicks every time I catch a blue.
What spoons do you use and weight?

Cowpokey, have you tried a top water plug with a dropper line off of the rear about two to three feet of leader with a Clouser on it? That's what I am going try around the mouth of West/Rhode river sometime this week. You can run that off of one side and another bait of choice on the other side.

I've used an Elk Hair Caddis with a bead head dropper for trout in the stream with a fly rod...but never a dropper off a plug on conventional tackle.

Cowpokey, it's the same principle just with bigger equipment. 3 or 4 inch plug and the dropper behind it. Like high/low rig off of a 3-way swivel only without the 3-way and the upper bait is on top. The top is the attention getter and sometimes they take it or turn away and go for the dropper. You can either tie to your rear treble hook or I at times remove the treble and tie to the split ring. Just like Trout only bigger. It's worth a try and will work in Fresh water also.

You can also try this with the fly ahead of the plug instead. The idea is to make the larger plug look as if it is chasing a smaller bait fish. I prefer to use streamers like a Deceiver instead of a Clouser with this technique so the fly will ride above the plug in the water column. When you tie the fly ahead of the plug you can tie it off the swivel or use a dropper loop. I've caught plenty of fish on either the plug or fly and sometimes both. Topwater plugs work well with this and so do swimming plugs.

Going by your picture it looks like they were giving lighthouse tours.

Your imagery analysis is spot on.
